Piqua, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 1,643 at the 2010 census[1]. It lies along the Piqua River and is located in Clermont County. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Piqua were French traders and fur trappers in 1669-1670 who named it La Rochelle after their ship, La Rochelle which had stopped there on its way back from a trading voyage to Canada. The name stuck and Piqua became known as "the little settlement on the river." The first settler in Piqua was James Fenton who built a cabin in 1795 just south of where Main Street now stands. He was followed by his brother David Fenton who bought land east of town from John Lynch for $500 in 1802.[2] In 1810, Hardin Waring sold 640 acres (2 km²) around present day Piqua upstream from downtown to include what is now the eastern edge of town limits; this current section forms part of today's Downtown business district boundaries. Waring also donated 4 cypress trees that stand today near Third Street between High Street and Elm Street in central Piqua across from Old Market Square).[3] In 1811, Nicholas Wilkinson purchased 320 acres (12 km²) further downstream including what is now downtown but excluding present-day parts of east and west Townships 2nd Ward and 3rd Ward; this area formed part of today's north side business district boundaries before becoming Franklin Township when it was organized into townshiphood on November 15th, 1836.[4] PquA residents voted to dissolve their townshiphood status on December 12th, 1836,[5][6],[7] forming Franklin Township with an equal number of male residents and female residents votingpersons instead of one man + one woman+one man form township organization typical at that time[8], thus making Piqua one county seat for Clermont County until 1898 when Holmesburg became county seat due to its population growth which outpaced that for Clermont County combined[9]. On February 14th 1861 - one day after Union forces invaded Kentucky - all citizens within seven miles (11 km) radius east or west of Dayton marched four blocks down Fifth Avenue towards City Hall demanding draft exemption if they desired not serve military service during the American Civil War; they were successful enough at getting verbal assurances from Mayor Thomas Minton not to be drafted even though most males within those seven miles did become soldiers during that war effort as well as many females within those same seven kilometers either voluntarily enlisting or being conscripted into military units such as Nurse Jane Addams' household whose six daughters volunteered themselves for service during both world wars).[10] When Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Dayton on April 12th 1865 he found over 100 men assembled outside City Hall demanding exemption from serving in military because they would be fighting against fellow Americans rather than our Confederate enemies! The men were then transported inside without any incident although some did eventually go off duty into battle later that day when called upon by General Grant! Although Draft riots occurred throughout America following Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – primarily centered around Philadelphia – these disturbances were much more limited residing mostly around Springfield where large numbers took up arms against federal troopsoutside local homes leading ultimately to only three arrests statewide out Of A Totalpopulationof over 300 thousand amoungstAll Americans prior To1865
Piqua was founded in 1788 as a trading post on the Scioto River by General George Washington and his army. Piqua grew quickly, becoming an important commercial center during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. In 1814, Piqua was named after General Anthony Wayne, who had helped lead the American side in that war. The city experienced significant growth during the 19th century, with construction of public works projects such as a canal and a waterway. By 1900, Piqua's population had reached over 10,000 people. However, during World War I, Piqua's economy collapsed due to military service and rationing; however, it slowly recovers during the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, Piqua became one of America's most heavily defended cities; however, its residents were forced to evacuate when Japanese forces bombed the city on August 14th 1945. In recent years, Piqua has seen some redevelopment efforts; for example, a new library was built in 2006 and another shopping mall is under development adjacent to downtown.
