In 1857, Ohio-born chemist and inventor George Stephenson invented the first successful locomotive engine, the Rocket. In 1868 he founded The Liverpool Ship Canal Company to build a navigable canal from Liverpool to Manchester. Just before his death in 1878, Stephenson donated £5,000 toward the construction of a new optical instrument factory in Piqua, Ohio. This factory became known as The Stephenson Institute and remains one of America's leading industrial powerhouses today. The origins of modern optical instruments can be traced back to 1795 when German scientist Johann Karl Friedrich Hess designed an eyeglasses design that quickly became popular with military and other outdoor workers. Piqua is a city in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 17,314 at the 2010 census. It is the eighth-largest city in Muskingum County and one of the largest cities in Summit County. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The Piqua area was first settled by early European settlers as part of what became Muskingum County. In 1806, John Wilkinson bought 403 acres (16 ha) of land east of present-day Piqua from George Armstrong Cinque for $1,000. He named his new settlement after French explorer Pierre Beaulieu and called it "Beaulieu's Purchase". Wilkinson built a log cabin on his land and surveyed it into lots for sale to early settlers. By 1810, many residents had moved to Piqua from nearby Tiffin and Athens Township because of its good location for trade with surrounding counties and its access to water supplies via the Muskegon River. In 1811, Wilkinson sold his lands to James Daugherty for $10 per acre ($ ). Daugherty founded Daugherty & Company which became one of the leading transportation companies in central Ohio during the 19th century. In 1821, John Fenton bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) north of present-day Piqua from James Daugherty for $5 peracre ($ ). He homesteaded this tract and named it "Fenton's Purchase". Fenton developed extensive agricultural interests within Piqua until he died in 1875; his heirs continued these holdings until 1907 when they were merged into Wm Gorman's company which later became Dayton Steel Corporation. The original village site now lies entirely within adjacent Muskegon Heights neighborhood south of I-675/US 12 Alternate between Euclid Avenue and Walnut Street east of Clinton Street; much remains unchanged from when it was first settled by early European pioneers over 100 years ago including a few frame buildings still standing today near US 12 Alternate along Euclid Avenue). In 1825, Peter Ziegler purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) north east of present-day Piqua from James Fenton for $5 peracre ($ ). His settlement reached an peak membership around 1830 with some 80 dwellings but declined thereafter due to competition from larger settlements nearby; however, some remaining evidence suggests that he may have been among the earliest developers who laid out what is now downtown Piqueha

The Wrights operated a gristmill and sawmill near Piqua for many years, until they sold them to George W. Stephenson in 1875. Stephenson developed Piqua into an important manufacturing town throughout the late 19th century. In 1902, he donated land to build the Piqua Municipal Market Place, which is now one of downtown Piqua's most popular attractions. In 1954, Piqua became part of metropolitan Toledo when that city was split into two parts along racial lines. Hispanic residents of Toledo continued to live in much of north central Ohio while white residents moved into areas such as east Toledo and south Dayton. As a result, few African Americans lived in either part of Toledo after World War II. However, since blacks had been living in Toledo since before that city was founded, some began moving there in search of opportunities during those years. In 1957, black residents formally petitioned for incorporation into Toledo as a Black City; however, it took several more years before this request was granted despite strong community support."
