Piqua is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 7,521 as of the 2010 census, making it the largest settlement in Lucas County. Piqua is located on the southern edge of Lake Erie, about 20 miles (32 km) west-southwest of Cleveland and 25 miles (40 km) east-northeast of Buffalo. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Piqua was French explorer Jean de La Salle in 1679. Jesuit missionaries had been living in this area since 1735; they founded Mission San Francisco Javier in 1749, which became one of America's oldest religious missions. padre Junípero Serra arrived on horseback from Alta California in 1817 and began preaching Christianity to Native Americans who were then living near present-day Piqua and other surrounding settlements including Ashtabula, Canandaigua, Seneca Rocks, Sandusky Bayou and Walled Lake. In 1827 Piqua was chartered as a town by treaty between United States representatives John Greenleaf Whipple and Simon Cameron; settlers soon began arriving from all over northeastern Ohio to make their homes there." In 1829 Piqua got its first schoolhouse when a group led by Revs George Kroll formed an academy for poor children under direction of Father Daniel Soltis; within two years that school had become an elementary school with room for only thirty students but it quickly gained popularity because it offered education at a very low cost to parents who could not afford sending their children to better schools elsewhere or paying for private tutors while working full time outside the home. In 1836 A&P grocery store opened followed by another store on High Street called Hometown Grocery & Cigar Store which served local farmers until 1957 when it closed shop due to economic problems associated with rural electrification leading to loss of jobs for many local farmers during World War II On September 3rd 1920 Toledo’s last gasoline station before Prohibition closed it down with no warning save for 10 minutes notice given through loudspeakers announcing that gas would be available at next station over mile away

In 1849, the city incorporated as part of Hamilton County and it remained that way until 1953 when it merged with Cuyahoga County to form Cleveland-area suburban Cleveland Township. As part of this merger, Piqua's annexation by Cleveland increased its population from 730 to 2,000 residents within two decades. The economy of Piqua revolves around agriculture and manufacturing; both are very important industries hereabouts because they provide much employment for local residents and help support regional businesses. Agriculture includes corn (maize), soybeans, wheat, cotton and hay; manufacturing includes aluminum products (in particular Triton air conditioners), cars (Ford Frisbees) and radios (RCA Victor Talking Radios). while retail tradesupported by local service shops provides most economic activity hereabouts including grocery stores ( Kroger), convenience stores (Target) as well as various types of fabric stores/retailer(Sears).
