It is the most populous city in Butler County and the second-most populous city in Ohio after Cleveland. Piqua's history dates back to 1815 when it was founded as a small community on the Scioto River by Colonel George Washington Smith and his family. In 1827, Piqua became the capital of the Northwest Territory of Ohio and remained so until 1787 when it merged with other Northwest Territory cities into what is now Cincinnati. The original town site was located on an bend of the Scioto River near its mouth on Olden Road (now State Route 11). The first settler in what would become Piqua arrived in 1815 from Indiana via boat landing on the Scioto River. Colonel George Washington Smith and his family organized a small community called "Pequatuck" around this time; they were met with mixed reactions from local Native American residents who considered Smiths guests to be invaders without leave. The group of early settlers built their first homes from logs that were brought downriver by riverboat. By 1830, Piqua had a post office, store, schoolhouse and one church complete with pews provided by Virginia Templeton; it also boasted an arsenal for shooting arrows across the river at nearby Fort Dearborn which served as a law enforcement center during frontier times. In 1827, Pqua became part of newly formed Northwest Territory following its cession to Great Britain following its war with America over independence from Great Britain; this territory included all present day Butler County except portions east of Lake Erie including parts now located in Cleveland and Akron. In 1833/34 General James Kapp set out against Native Americans living along Youngstown Creek escorting 200 men under command of Major John Winterbottom through what was then Indian Territory seeking scalps or horses for military use against Mexico encroaching upon Ulysses S Grant’s new nation; what followed is often called “Kapp’s War” because Kapp achieved success beyond his expectations leading some locals to dub him “America’s Greatest Soldier” despite never taking up arms himself After years serving garrison duty at Portsmouth Army Depot outside Sandusky proper but finding little opportunity for advancement due largely to lacklustre leadership within Ulysses S Grant’s army corps commandership Gouverneur Morris took up position commanding forces besieging Forts Harrisonburg & Frankfort January 25th Mobile March 15th 1863 while BLUETOOTH regiments protected Harper’s Ferry Railroad bridge southward across Little Miami River Eventually operations moved northward towards New Albany where Lord Donelson appointed Brigadier General David Dixon commander effective May 1st 1863 resulting in large scale engagements such as Battle At Perryville June 10th 1865 involving 5 companies OF UPLAND CAVALRY vs 6 COMPANY OF NATIVE AMERICAN WARRIORS . In total over 50 MEN were killed with 3 officers severely wounded however brigadier general Dixon personally led main body back home unopposed . Although many details surrounding this bloody battle remain classified even today no single accountay provides a comprehensive understanding nor does it accord with prevailing historical theory about battlefield conditions that day . To date there has been only one published study providing critical analysis tryingto answer key questions about specific events occurring that day namely: did cavalry charge directly into infantry line? Why did some men reach safety but others didn't? Why wasn't artillery employed? While some researchers dispute these conclusions based off limited research available they do provide valuable insights into why certain battles occurred while others didn't During Reconstruction efforts following Civil War ended in 1865 northern Ohio saw rapid population growth thanks largely to agricultural production generated by freedmen enrolling in OSHA labor camps primarily located southeast of Toledo along I-75 continuing north until well into 1970s when those areas were annexed by Toledo making Piqua again alone among Greater Cleveland municipality having no suburbs or neighborhoods

The following year, the territorial legislature passed a bill creating a new county to be formed out of portions of Richland and Montgomery counties. Joshua L. Piqua donated land to form the county courthouse square, which still occupies that location today. In 1841, Piqua became part of the newly formed United States as part of Indiana Territory when it was split off from Ohio Territory. In 1847, Piqua incorporated as a city and soon developed into one of the most important commercial settlements in central Ohio until its incorporation into the city of Cleveland in 1896.
