When Piqua, Ohio became a town in 1892, the first thing that its citizens did was to get organized and begin thinking about how they would be able to meet their needs for new infrastructure. In 1830 Knopp donated 500 acres (2 km²) northwest of his home near today's intersection of I-71 northbound and US route 422 southbound for use as a township square known as " Mechanicks Square." Piqua is a city in, and the county seat of, Piqua County, Ohio, United States. The population was 69,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would eventually become Piqua were two families from Lancaster County who came overland from Pennsylvania in 1814. They named their new settlement "Pequa" after their mother's maiden name and founded a small log cabin on the Scioto River near present-day Parkersburg. The first post office was established in 1816 at the mouth of Indian creek. In 1824, John Smith (who had come to Piqua with his family) organized an initial group of seven men to build a bridge over Cuyahoga River as part of a survey for Horace Greeley's railroad project. The town site was chosen because it lay within one mile (1 km) of what would be future Cleveland. In 1830–31, Orson Pratt built a frame courthouse and jail which still stands today on Main Street across from the bank where he dammed up the Scioto River to create his streambeds for irrigation purposes – one of several early community benefits that helped make Piqua a thriving town. During President James Kahl's administration (1829–34), American Indians led by Chief Waconda raided farms northeast of Piqua and burned homes and crops; this caused much alarm among residents and prompted Mr. Kahl to call out militia forces to protect them against further attacks by Native Americans. Afterward Waconda agreed not to raid again if white people lived among them peacefully and accepted presents from agents representing Ulysses S Grant instead. When General William Tecumseh Sherman’s army invaded Ohio during the Civil War on April 12, 1863, most inhabitants fled or were taken captive; few buildings remained standing in downtown Piqua after war ended less than three months later when all but some buildings were destroyed by fire set by Union troops retreating back into Ohio Valley positions south of Dayton.. A local storekeeper recounted: “On April 16th we heard firing behind us…We went around our block [and] saw General Burnside’s cavalry wheeling about twenty times outside our door…. We knew then that they had burned our town down as we could see their horses going off into these hillsides every time they wheeled around”.. Most businesses closed before winter as transportation became unavailable east of Dayton due to Union military blockade; few reopened until 1865 when railroads arrived.. By 1870 only 350 citizens remained in downtown Piqua; most millworkers abandoned town because there was no work available elsewhere due to increasing competition from larger cities such as Cleveland and Cincinnati .. By 1880 Downtown Piqueo consisted mostly of frame houses with few remaining businesses or residences
