It remained an unincorporated community until 1978 when it joined with other municipalities to form the new City of Cincinnati-Piqua Incorporation which held its first meeting on October 15th that year. Today, Piqua remains one of two cities in Greater Cincinnati that are not part of any county or township

Piqua, Ohio is a small town located in the Trumbull County area of central Ohio. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Piqua is the only incorporated community in Trumbull County. It lies on the border of Trumbull and Summit counties and is about 22 miles east of Cleveland. Piqua began as an agricultural settlement in 1811, when Nicholas Weiser donated land to establish a post office and store near his farmstead. The first store was built on what is now Main Street. In 1813, Piqua became part of the new state of Ohio after it was admitted to the Union as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. In 1827, Uriah Stowell erected a mill on South Main Street within present-day Piqua limits. A gristmill capable of grinding corn and flour continued operation until1875; however, it ceased operations following a fire that destroyed the building in 1875. A sawmill operated from 1829 to 1865; but this mill also ceased operations following damage by a flood during an ice storm in 1865. A cotton gin operated from 1830 to 1860; but this machine also stopped operating due to problems with water leakage caused by Addison Mills' use of coke fired lime for lightening production at nearby Sandusky). A locomotive depot served Piqua until 1951 when all trackage leading thereto was withdrawn for safety reasons following an accident involving two local trains springing down switchbacks near Ashtabula Heights (now Mount Pleasant). The first post office serving Piqua opened on November 1, 1811, under the name North Bend Eagle Post Office (later renamed Westmoreland Post Office). It closed on February 17th 1861 because there were no mail carriers available from Cincinnati because that city had become part of Kentucky after ratifying its own statehood legislation that same year." The original store house still stands today on Main Street just south of corner with 95th Ave., across from Breslin's Hardware Store which has been vacant since 1957!
The Piqua Post Office was established in 1887, and served the community until it was discontinued in 1978.
