Piqua is a city in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the edge of Trumbull County. The population was 21,362 at the 2010 census. It is home to Piqua State Park, which covers an area of 114 acres (46 km²). The park has a rifle range and a playground for children. The first gun sling in Piqua was invented by John Davenport in 1812. He made them from old clothesline nooses that had been cut down into short pieces so that they could be easily transported as projectiles. It was founded in 1814 by Captain John Reynolds and his family as a small trading post on the then- Indian Reserve east of Akron. When Piqua became an incorporated town in 1871, it annexed the village of Newburgh to its south and west. The first settler in what is now Piqua was Capt John Reynolds who arrived with his family from Rhode Island on December 7, 1814. He built a cabin near present day Park Street and Prospect Avenue on what is today called "Reynolds' Hill". The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location at the junction of two major trails - one leading east to Cleveland and another heading west to Cincinnati - and its easy access to trade with Indians along both routes. In 1835 Captain Reynolds donated land that forms the eastern border of Piqua today's downtown area. In 1861 when Piqua became an incorporated town, it annexed the village of Newburgh to its south and west which made it one of only three towns in Ohio without any Native American reservations within their boundaries (the others being Dayton and Athens). This move marked the beginning of a period during which white settlers encroached upon Native American land until all Native American reservations were abolished in 1934 under statehood laws passed by Ohioans themselves. He soon realized that he could not do this alone and gathered together some other entrepreneurs to form the company called the Great Forks Trading Post. This company traded goods with Indian traders from eastern Canada until 1800 when American traders began to arrive in greater numbers. By 1800, American companies had become dominant in trade with Native Americans so Wayne decided to start a new business—the Erie Canal Company. This company built the Erie Canal which connected Lake Erie to Pennsylvania and York County (now Westmoreland County). This project earned him national fame and made him very rich. The City of Piqua was founded on November 1st1814 by Anthony Wayne and his brother JohnathanWayne Jr..
