On April 15, 1907, Piqua became the county seat of Stark County. Piqua had its own jail and court system from 1907 to 1918. The Chisholm Dam was built in 1916 and caused water levels in the river to rise so high that the town began to lose power and residents were forced to flee during floods in 1917 and 1919. The dam also created an artificial lake which served as the town's primary source of hydropower until it was replaced by a more modern facility in 1978. In 1922, Piqua annexed part of Clinton Township which made it its third municipality.
Piqua is a small town located in the state of Ohio, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Piqua County and home to the Piqua Municipal Airport. The community was founded in 1824 by French fur trader Pierre-Jacques Viger and named after his native village of Qiuka on the St. Lawrence River in New France. Piqua's history can be traced back to 1824 when French fur trader Pierre-Jacques Viger established a trading post near present day Piqua with his family. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Piqua in 1827 and it would not become part of Ohio until 1828 when Native Americans living nearby moved into what is now Piqua from their ancestral land south of Lake Erie. In 1830, American explorer David Thompson traveled through this area and recommended that Ohio give its eastern border to Canada because he believed Canada could help protect America's frontier against Mexico who were expanding westward at an alarming rate. After much debate, Ohio passed an act creating Piqua County on February 9, 1834., which included land east of Saginaw Creek within the new county limits. The first courthouse for this new county was built on Main Street near where present day US Route 6 meets Interstate 80 today (the building still stands). In 1840, Ladds Hardware Company was founded here by grain merchant James Ladds and continued to grow until it merged with Macy's department store chain in 1968 to form one largest department store chain in North America with over 350 stores across six countries including United States & Canada . The community experienced rapid growth during World War II as many local businesses turned towards production for military needs such as munitions manufacturing or aircraft assembly plants; however, these operations closed or withdrew after the war ended without leaving any lasting legacy behind for residents or businesses along Main Street between Saginaw Creek and I-80 . There has been some development activity recently including a new grocery store opening adjacent to the original Ladds Hardware location on Elmwood Avenue just off State Route 6A within walking distance of most residents while other retail establishments have also opened up along State Route 6A since 2007 which have had positive impacts on traffic congestion around town center; however, overall there remains little evidence that this growing community will lead to significant change over time given its recent history . Piqua, Ohio is a small town in the Muskingum County, Ohio area. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The name of Piqua comes from the French word for "place" (qui-qa). French traders and explorers first visited this area in the late 1600s, and by 1800 Piqua had become a small village with a post office. In 1821, Piqua was incorporated as a city under the name of "Paris." By 1830 Piqua had become an agricultural center with hundreds of families farming corn and beans on large tracts of land along Beaver Creek. During the American Civil War, residents served in Union Army units including Company K of Buffalo Township's 1st Battalion (9th Regiment) which fought at Battle Powell Bridge on November 15, 1862. After the war ended, many men returned to their farmsteads while others founded businesses such as a sawmill and blacksmith shop. Many local citizens also became involved in politics as well; during Reconstruction era (1865-1877), Piqua elected two officials: one as mayor and one as recorder. In 1868 Congress passed United States Census Act which required new immigrants to report their place of birth within five years after arriving in America. As per that act all those born between December 16th 1825 and May 4th 1865 were counted regardless if they moved or resided in Piqua continuously since their arrival – thus creating much confusion! On April 14th 1870 City Clerk George Naylor recorded that there were 632 people living in Pryor Village when it was included within City Limits; however by 1880 Census there were only 354 residents remaining! That same year James Wickersham donated land comprising present dayWB Highway 10A to make way for what would later be called Dayton Boulevard! It wasn’t until 1920 when General Motors began manufacturing cars here that numerous businesses sprung up such as Fritos factory & tire store #2 & 3 & grocery store #1 which are still extant today! After World War II many veterans settled here but soon left for other cities because of low wages and high housing prices outside of Ohio; though some have since returned to live here permanently or started new businesses inside our city limits Some interesting facts about our city include: - In 2000 we celebrated our 375 th birthday with a parade through downtown streets followed by an open air picnic at Jefferson Park
Piqua was founded in 1814 as a small community on the Scioto River. The town grew quickly, and by 1837 it had a population of 2,500. In 1861, Piqua became the capital of Ohio after Columbus. The city expanded rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and by 1939 it had an estimated population of over 50,000. During World War II, Piqua was one of the few American cities to remain largely unscathed by bombing raids. In 1951, Piqua became the first city in Ohio to adopt a gay rights ordinance. In 1970, Piqua voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation by Toledo. This resulted in rapid growth for both cities; however, Toledo has since rejected Piqua’s offer for annexation multiple times. In 2001, Piqua opened its first hospital - St John's Health System - which is now one of the largest healthcare providers in Greater Cleveland. In 2013, Piqua completed construction of its own downtown mall which is home to several large retailers and restaurants as well as public space including a plaza that hosts annual street fairs and orchestral concerts.
