Piqua is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat for Cuyahoga County. The population was 38,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Piqua was founded by Loyalists during the American Revolution on December 12, 1781 as Piqua Township in present-day Cuyahoga County. In 1815, it became a village and later a township within Parma Township. On November 8, 1868, it became a city when its township was split into two parts – Parma Township and Piqua Township North – and it annexed portions of neighboring townships along with Warrensville Heights and Mentor until its total annexation reached its current size. In 1907, residents of nearby Lorain took to their streets to protest what they saw as Mayor John Tilden's attempt to annex more land from them without their consent or input; this led to Tilden's resignation that same year. The following year, officials convened an election to choose a new mayor but only three candidates received votes: incumbent John Fenton (D), challenger Harry Wilkinson (L) and newcomer Edward Witherow (R). After much debate among city council members about who should succeed Tilden—with no clear consensus—the municipal election on November 3 resulted in Witherow becoming mayor after majority vote from all councilmembers

Piqua was founded in 1836 by led by George Washington Dixon. The town became a part of the United States in 1907. Piqua is home to the National Museum of American History and has a variety of cultural attractions, including the Piqua Arts Center and the Piqua Bowl.
