In the early 1800s, Piqua, Ohio was a small town with a population of around 1,000. The town was located in what is now the city of Cleveland. At that time, gun ownership and ownership of firearms were illegal in Ohio. There were very few guns in Piqua, and the only way to purchase one was to go through a dealer. One such dealer was John Butler who operated out of his home on State Route 511. In 1812, Butler started selling firearm t-shirts for sale within Piqua. These shirts were designed to advertise and promote gun ownership and use within Piqua. The first handgun advertisement on an Ohio pistol shirt appeared in 1814 on the front cover of the local paper called The Courier Tribune. This advertisement featured an image of a pistolsleeve holster with the text “For All occasions” written across it. It is likely that this holster appeared as part of a marketing campaign for Butler’s store which served as both a sales outlet and place where customers could buy firearmsuble

As industries continued to grow and new residents arrived in town, Piqua experienced rapid growth over the next several decades and reached its current size by 2000. Today's economy is based largely on agriculture with some light manufacturing activity; however, many businesses have closed or relocated since 2008 because of competitive pressures from neighboring cities within commuting distance (Cleveland alone has a population increase rate greater than 10%). Population growth has led both Toomer's Corner development near downtown Piqueau (to the north) and Clairton Downs shopping center just east of town off Interstate 83 between Middletown Township/Bellefontaine Township (to the south) – both are experiencing heavy traffic congestion caused by increasing populationsdensity along I-83 corridor."
