Piqua is a small town in Northwest Ohio. Its population was 9,585 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Springfield, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 as Piqua Township by pioneers from Delaware County and has since grown to encompass over 4 square miles (10 km²). The name derives from an Algonquin word meaning "place where many fish spawn." One of the first businesses in town was a blacksmith shop operated by Samuel Mayhew. Famed coach builder George Stephenson stopped in Piqua on his way to visit mines near Zanesville during 1830, and recommended that residents build a courthouse on the site of present-day First National Bank Building. The cornerstone for the courthouse was laid on July 10, 1830, by Governor John De Witt and Mayor George Wacker. At that time Piqua's post office only served residents of its own township. In 1834, Piqua became one of three townships within Scioto County when it was organized; all other towns were added to Lucas County following western Ohio's admission into the United States as a new state in 1803. When Scioto County merged with Summit County in 1907, Piqua remained within Summit County until 1912 when it became part of Dayton Township In 1870, land comprising what are now parts of Cleveland and Akron was bought by James Middletown for $5 per acre (0·27 ha). This purchase limited development around what is now downtown Piqua because development would have involved building on top of valuable Native American burial sites which could not be disturbed without compensation. In 1875 Middletown sold 1/4 mile (0·6 km²) east of downtown to JnoDonnelly for $4000 cash plus tenement plots adjoining each side for $8000 more; this created what is now Fourth Ward Park and provided enough open space between buildings so settlement could grow without disturbing natural resources or archaeological remains which were important to early settlers. These settlers soon realized that they needed water to irrigate their crops, so they built dams on two rivers which flow through downtown Pique: the Erie and Mahoning Rivers. They also constructed brick buildings which still stand today as evidence of their settlement skills. Today's economy is based on manufacturing since Pique has a large supply of bricks available to be made into products such as fireworks and mortar for construction purposes; however, there are also several small businesses located throughout town which provide services such as catering or lawn care. One popular tourist attraction in town is definitely the beautiful historic district known as "Old Town". This district includes many old brick buildings dating back to before 1800 including one that serves as a museum!
