In 1844, when construction began on the line of the Erie Canal at Sewickley Heights near today's downtown Pickerington, residents organized themselves into a committee to raise money to finance the canal project. On March 2, 1845 they recorded their signatures at village hall pledging $5 per acre (2 ha) for land along its route; this amount would be raised again and again as needed for various purposes associated with building and maintaining the canal: road building, bridges over streams or canals, ditches and culverts etc.. In 1865 Confederate General Ulysses S Grant while campaigning through central Ohio delivered an address from Mount Vernon Baptist Church just outside of Pickerington where he said "This gives me great pleasure – I am announced as your governor – I will do all that I can to protect you." This event helped solidify Pickerton's place within Ohio during Reconstruction despite allegations by some Republicans that it had aided Unionism instead of partisanship

The first settler in Pickerington was Nicholas Pickering. He and his family arrived in 1796 from England and began to farm land around what is now downtown Pickerington. In 1801, Pickerington became a village incorporated by Ohio law. The first post office opened in 1804, and the first doctor to serve was Dr. John Fenton in 1810. Pickerington's growth as a residential community can be traced back to the early 1800s when settlers began moving into central Ohio to find new opportunities for agriculture and commerce. By 1850, there were over 100 families living in Pickerington Village including merchants, craftsmen, farmers, mechanics and teachers; many of whom would continue to reside there until their deaths or move away during the late 19th century." In 1855, James Ahern purchased 5200 acres (2 km2) of land on the east side of I-271 near present day University Circle for $8 per acre ($140 per hectare). This property would become known as Ahern's Corner which continues to play an important role in local history today as one of only two parcels remaining undeveloped within city limits -the other being Lot 10 – which has been annexed by neighboring Cleveland since 1954."
