In 1805, it changed its name to Petersboro after Congressman Abraham Peters of Pennsylvania who had come to visit Trumbull County that year and saw "a grand prospect for agriculture" there. In 1816, settlers from Waynesburg founded a village called Westville on the west side of Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard near present day Polaris Avenue in what is now downtown Pickerington. This village lasted until1820 when it merged with nearby Eastville to form this current city limits area today known as downtown Pickerington Pickerington has experienced various periods of growth throughout its history including during World War II when many factories were built within the boundaries; during the 1960s through 1970s when new shopping malls were built adjacent to downtown; and more recently due to changes in technology which have resulted in an increase in business opportunities Downtown including restaurants and light industrial businesses since 2003 It's estimated that over 50% or all jobs within 15 miles (24 km) are located within Downtown

On July 4, 1831, Pickerington became the county seat of Stark County when it was organized from portions of Summit and Athens counties. In 1830, John Pritchard built the first known sawmill and gristmill in central Pickerington. These mills continue to operate to this day. In 1835-36, George Stephenson founded the railroad through Pickerington which became one of the most important transportation corridors in Ohio during that time period. The mill towns along the track quickly sprang up around it with businesses catering to passengers and freight coming into and leaving the mill towns for miles around. Many famous residents were born or raised in or near Pickerington including George Stephenson (the inventor of locomotives), Lewis Cass (the 3rd US Secretary of State), Fannie Lou Hamer (founder of Aflac), Wernher von Braun (creator of moon landing), Draymond Green (football player/coach) and many more!
