In 1868, Reverend Thurston Cooke purchased Reynolds' house and established Cooke's Store on 7th Street southeast of present-dayPickerton High School; Cooke continued to operate the store until his death in 1893. A new store was built on Elm Street northeast of present-dayPickerton High School by George Whetstone in 1907; it became known as Whetstone's Drug Store after him. A fire destroyed most of the building on Elm Street nearpresent-dayHigh School on October 15, 1913; however, most of the contents survived including toolboxes and records from Whetstone's earlier stores which had been stored there before the fire.
