Pickerington is a small town in the northwest corner of Ohio. It is located about 25 miles northeast of Cincinnati and about 20 miles southwest of Dayton. The population was 19,834 at the 2000 census. Pickerington was founded by General George Washington in 1793 as an agricultural community on the east side of the Scioto River. In 1821, it became part of Hamilton County. By 1836, it had become a town and was named for Colonel John Pickering, a member of the United States Congress from Ohio in that year. The first public shooting range in Pickerington was built on Canfield Road near what is now its central business district in 1868. In 1900, Pickerington became one of six townships within Hamilton County to form the new township of North Canton. That same year, North Canton detached itself fromHamilton County and incorporated as its own municipality with a population of 28,594 people. In 1926, North Canton annexed other parts of Pickerington including South Canton and Westwood Village to form a new municipality with a population of 71,021 people. In 1974, Pickerington again detached itself from Hamilton County and adopted its present name: Pickerington Township (of which only South Canton remains). That same year saw the opening of America's first indoor shooting range - The Range Unlimited - in nearby Westwood Village. In 1984, The Range Unlimited merged with another indoor shooting range - Rangeman's Shooting Park - to form America's second largest indoor shooting park with over 1 million square feet (97 hectares) available for use. Only two buildings still stand in downtown Pickerington – both date back to 1836: The First National Bank building (now home to several restaurants) and what is now Allstate Insurance Company headquarters (the first building on Euclid Avenue NE). After years of development in which only low-income residents were allowed access to many aspects of town life – including alcohol sales – picketing began in earnest by early 1900s when organized labor gained influence throughout American industry following workers’ victories at elections based upon their concerns about race discrimination against African Americans working within white-owned factories statewide.
