Pickerington, Ohio is a city in the Ohio Valley region of the United States. The population was 43,693 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pickerington County and part of the Dayton–Dayville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Pickerington was first settled by English farmers in 1795. When much of eastern Ohio became part of the United States during the American Revolution, Pickerington's British-born residents were forced to leave their homes and take refuge in Pennsylvania. In 1797, General Washington founded what is now Delaware County as an agricultural township for those evacuated from Pennsylvania. When America gained independence from Great Britain, it decided to keep parts of Ontario (now Canada) and western Massachusetts as part of its new country. In 1799, President George Washington appointed James Ketchum to be one of two commissioners to select a site for a new government capital on the Scioto River near where modern day Dayton would be established 10 years later. The original picketingtons voted against building at what is now downtown Dayton but Ketchum won over them with his proposal for an elegant brick courthouse and stately public buildings on High Street between First and Second Streets which still stands today (the building also houses State Superior Court). In 1801, when Kentucky was admitted into the Union as a separate country, Pickerington became its territorial capital; however, it continued to serve as the provisional capital until March 3rd 1802 when Congress moved from Philadelphia to Yorktown during The War for Independence. The original settlers of Pickerington were farmers and their families who arrived on the east side of the Scioto River in 1795. They were among the first to settle in what is now Pickerington Township. The township was incorporated in 1824 and became part of Lucas County, Ohio, which was created in 1802 from parts of Wayne County. In 1865, Pickerington was one of the townships that merged into Union Township. At that time, Union Township extended from north to south along the Scioto River and included parts of modern-day Perrysburg and North Randall townships as well as part of what is now Georgetown Township. The merger made Pickerington one of the largest municipalities inLucas County by area. As an agricultural center for much of its early history, Pickerington remained an important place until population growth began to outstrip land availability around 1900. In that year, construction began on what would become known as Pickerington Park—an open space located just off Ridge Road near downtown—the first public park in central Lucas County. The park served as a gathering place for townspeople and residents until 1915 when it succumbed to development pressure and was replaced by newer parks across town. The decline of agriculture during World War II led to increased demand for jobs within picketington so industries such as brewing beer or tire manufacturing closed down; however, many local businesses still thrived through subsequent decades including bookbinding company Davenport & Company (now Jarden), grocery store Kroger (now Kroger) and several textile mills before disappearing altogether during suburbanization beginning in the late 1960s’s .
