Pickerington, Ohio is home to one of the largest knife industries in the United States. The town was founded in 1825 by General David Pickering and his family as a trading post between the Cuyahoga River and Detroit. In 1868, Pickerington became an incorporated town, and over the years, it has become one of the most important Bladesmithing towns in America. Pickerington's knife industry began with local farmers who grew corn, wheat and other local crops. They would cook their meals with spears, knives or spoons. As time passed, these small-scale farmers transitioned to making their own knives from various materials found around them: wood, metal or even bone. By the early 1900s, there were several local companies producing quality knives made from natural materials like hornet's nest cane and buffalo horn. In 1926, Dick Poindexter opened his first blade shop in downtown Pickerington. At that time there were just a handful of Knifemakers in America (Dick Poindexter being one of them) supplying all manner of Cutlery needs for both personal and commercial use. Dick quickly became known as one of our country’s leading Knifemakers due to his innovative designs and quality products. In 1950 he partnered up with George Wesselholdt Sr., another well-known Blade Maker who had been instrumental in helping turn American Bladesmithing into what it is today! Today Dick Poindexter continues to be responsible for many aspects at our company including design development/review; marketing; sales & distribution; technical support; manufacturing & assembly; packaging & shipping; and aftermarket services - all while providing excellent customer service throughout each step of the product process! The name comes from George Pickering, who bought land here in 1792. The township was created on March 14, 1802, from parts of the townships of Athens and Ironton. On April 6, 1827, it became a part of the new state of Indiana; on July 1, 1907 it became an independent municipality within Ohio under the name of Pickerington Heights. In 1933 it amalgamated with nearby Arlington to form Arlington Heights-Pickerington Township again. The current name is based on its location at the confluence of the Maumee River and Scioto River which made it convenient for shipping purposes during early history; before this it was known as "Pickeringtown". Pickerington is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1814 by General George Pickering and his family as a result of land grants they received from the state of Pennsylvania. In 1825, Pickerington became part of the newly organized Stark County and its first sheriff was James Auld. The first store in town was built on Main Street in 1827. By 1840, there were five stores and twenty-five residents in Pickerington. In 1849, David Salyer opened a grocery store on Elmira Road which became one of the most successful businesses in the town until it closed in 1907. In 1861, Isaac Allbright established a millinery business on State Avenue which continued to be successful until it closed also in 1907. During this time period picklery production increased as more women began working outside the home for wages. In 1865, John Caughey opened a general store on Whatcom Avenue which also became one of Pickerington's most successful businesses until it closed also in 1907. In 1886 Frank Pfleger opened an all-purpose grocery store on Summit Avenue which continued to be successful until it closed also in 1907; during this time period picklingProduction increased as more laborers converted to this production method because quality control now resided with those making the product rather than with specialty retailers who had used before hand methods such as boiling vinegar for souring foods or filtering impurities out of vinegar stocks.
