The area that became Pickerington had been Muslim territory since the early 16th century and there were references to Muslims living in the area as early as 1556 when French traders arrived at the mouth of the Scioto River and discovered Indian villages along its banks. In 1792, after much discussion among representatives from Northwest Territory delegates elected by residents of Fort Steuben Township near Cincinnati (now Columbus), General John Adams signed an act creating Hamilton County within Indiana Territory and naming it for George Washington's father-in-law and new Superintendent of Indian Affairs under British rule, James Kempton (1751–1814).
