Pickerington is a small town in the northwestern corner of Ohio, approximately 15 miles southeast of Cleveland on I-271. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. They grew corn and wheat for their own use and export to England. In 1825 they sold their holdings to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., who became one of the most influential people in American politics. In 1830 he married Margery's sister Emmalee Biddle. Pickerington developed as a center for trade on the Scioto River near its junction with the Little Miami River (now part of Delaware County). The town started to grow after Powell built a ferry crossing over the Little Miami River in 1836. By 1840 it had a hotel, several stores, two churches, three schools, and an arsenal/ammunition depot. In 1853 it absorbed neighboring village of Fairfieldville into its population; this occurred because Fairfieldville was unable to support itself without absorbing another community. In 1870 Pickerington annexed what is now Delaware Township; this annexation placed Pickerington right next door to Lima on both banks of the Scioto River which made it possible for businesses within reach of each other to prosper side-by-side without developing into separate townships or villages likeFairfieldville had done before them The name “Pickerington” originated from Colonel John Pickering’s family name which preoccupied him during his early years as settler hereabouts so that he did not have time or inclination towards acquiring any other appellation save that be bore himself simply “John” throughout his lifetime thus perpetuating thereby that honorable title even unto posterity should he survive until such time as all remains pure white male inhabitants thereof shall have passed away* [* by deed dated Dec 12th 1792 pickederington proprietor granted privilege by Court Martial convened under order dated September 6th 1792 - see records at Columbiana MSS Collection] After more than fifty years residency here I am happy certify that I am still “John” pickerington
