The history of gun targets in Pickerington, Ohio began with the first shot fired at a military site in the town on February 14, 1814. The site was part of Fort Dearborn and was used to shoot cannonballs at an enemy fort. A large parade ground was located near the fort and a target range was set up for artillery practice. Riflemen from nearby towns would come to shoot at the targets. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant's army passed through Pickerington on their way to battle at Gettysburg. Most of the town's businesses were destroyed in the fire that followed their destruction by General Grant's forces. However, some shops survived and became known as "Gunsmiths' Row." Today, Gunsmiths Row is still home to several businesses that deal in firearms repairs and sales. Pickerington has also been home to many shooting clubs over the years. The most famous club is Irwin Shooting Club which is located just outside of town on State Route 22nd Street. It has been hosting annual shoots since 1903! Other popular clubs include: Butler County Rifle Association (BCRA), Parma Rifle Club (PRC), Beaver Dam Creek Riflemens Shooting Association (BCRA), McKnight's Sporting Goods Range & Gun Emporium (MSGGEA) and First Congregational Churchgunnery Range (FCGR). It is one of the most populous cities in northeastern Ohio and has an economy that is centered around manufacturing and service industries. Pickerington's metropolitan area has a population of over 100,000 people and covers all or part of five counties: Medina, Ross, Clinton, Monroe and Licking. Pickerington was founded as a post office on October 25, 1811 by Joshua Pickering and his wife Hannah Cookston. The first settler in what would become Pickerington was Nicholas Wilkinson who built a cabin on land he had acquired from James Caldwell for $4200. In 1814, Samuel McCoy settled here with his family after moving from Chillicothe, Michigan. In 1821-22 John Ahern built two log houses on what is now Front Street; these were replaced in 1830 by two more homes – one on each side of First Street – which remain standing today as part of Pickerington's downtown district. In 1827, Daniel Dennison organized a group to build a canal through this region which became known as the " Darlington Canal" project because its main beneficiaries were local farmers looking to increase their production beyond their traditional markets in central Pennsylvania or Maryland due to changing patterns of transportation across those areas during that period. By 1830–31 only three miles (6 km) worth of earth had been worked upon when butchery saw fit to shut down operations due to high competition from Cincinnati; soon afterwards work resumed but was again interrupted by strikes along with other economic disruptions attributable to railroads entering this country at that time including slavery becoming legal in Kentucky ending any incentive for farmers there not to move eastward into new slave states such as Ohio where it remained illegal until 1865). The townspeople successfully lobbied for appropriations during the Panic of 1837 which led directly to its incorporation as an unincorporated village on February 15th following passage by the General Assembly authorizing township form within Hamilton County under certain specified conditions allowing for equal representation among wards within each township although no vote ever took place since all property within boundaries then apportioned remained unincorporated save for Potter Township lying outside limits set forth therein; however trusteeship did manage briefly exist between Pekin Township trustee John Haggerty (acting chairperson) & Pickerton trustee Amos Sibley thru mail ballots even though no actionable proceedings were ever taken.). Pickerington is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo metropolitan area. The first European to visit Pickerington was explorer John Cæsar French in 1795 while on his journey from Fort Pitt to Canton, Ohio. He called it "Pequimantic" and noted that there were white and black people living together in harmony. In 1814, American Revolutionary War Captain John Pickering founded what would become Pickerington as a frontier trading post on the Scioto River between Dayton and Cincinnati. The town grew rapidly due to its location by the river for transportation and its position as an important fur trade center. In 1827,Pickerington became one of the original ten wards of Medina County when it was created from parts of Westmoreland, Mercer and Montgomery counties. As Pickerington grew, so did its profile within the local community: it became known for its arts and culture; for being home to a number of small businesses; for having many public schools; and for its large population of Germans (and later Italians) who had moved into the town during the early 20th century following World War I
Pickerington was founded in 1792 by the General Israel Pickering. The town was named after George Pickering, an Revolutionary War general and signer of the Constitution of United States. The original settlers were farmers who used their land to grow corn, wheat, potatoes, and other crops. They also built a few homes and a church. In 1814, Pickerington became part of the new township of Athens. In 1828, Athens merged with neighboring townships to form the current township of Pickerington.
