In 1836 Michael Stephenson founded The Gilded Cage public restaurant adjacent to his home which became an important center for entertainment during the height of Cleveland's social clubs craze known as "the Great American Famine." As late as 1910 many residents still remembered Stephenson's days when he entertained celebrities such as President Ulysses S Grant with music from his restaurant nightly outside his home while they ate dinner inside; this tradition continued until just recently when all but one of Stephensons restaurants have closed or been replaced by fast food chains On July 6th 1907 Josephine Kapp purchased 1/4 acre (0 hectare) east of current day US Highway 20 southbound between US Highway 24 (now I-270)and present day US Highway 421 (now State Route 422). Later that year she erected what became known as Kapp House which housed her servants apartments until 1927 when it was moved to its current location across from Ball High School
