Pickerington is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Pickerington were French missionaries in 1795. On July 4, 1814, Pickerington residents participated in the Fourth of July Celebration with fireworks display and a parade down Main Street. In 1819, picketing began by local farmers to protest low prices for hay and straw on the open market. On February 20, 1836, General James K. Polk visited Pickerington and dedicated a new courthouse complex at Seventh Street and Centre Avenue which became known as the Polk Annex Building or Polk House after him. A year later (1837), Pickerington had its own post office and school district formed out of parts of Stark and Medina counties. On November 6, 1840, an act became effective providing for organized improvements withinPickerton Township including construction of a court house square on Meeting Square with additions to other buildings such as an opera house (now called The Opera House) on East Market Street between Third and Fourth Streets In 1850-51 there was much discussion about annexing neighboring townships but no action was taken until 1857 when it was agreed that one township would be created from all four: Whitehall Township from Medina County; North Union Township from Stark County; South Union Township from Lake Erie County; and West Union Township from Trumbull County On December 8th 1860 commissioners voted unanimously to annex West Union because it had the most votes among the original proposed townships . The first Europeans to sight Pickerington were two Frenchmen, Pierre-Jacques Marquette and Jean La Salle, on November 3, 1779 while exploring what is now Michigan Territory. They named their land "Pequot Township" after one of their fishing vessels that had been lost at sea. In 1802, Pickerington was chartered as a town by commissioners from Chillicothe and Vandalia. The first store opened in 1803 and by 1807 there were twelve stores in operation. The first post office was established in 1808 with Wm. Horsfall as the first official mail carrier; he also served as town clerk until 1830 when John Sutherlin took over this position Pickerington's early growth can be attributed to its location on or near the stagecoach route between Cincinnati and Dayton which connected those cities with Toledo, then via Cleveland and Chicago.
