Pickerington is a city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 20,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stark County. Pickerington is located in the centralwest portion of the state and on the border of Butler and Stark counties. Pickerington was founded as a post office on November 3, 1811 by Colonel John Pickering and Dr. George Worthington. The town was named after Captain Ezekiel Pickering who had been killed during the War of 1812 while serving with General Harrison's army. In 1821, colonel Pickering donated land to build an academy which became known as Western Reserve University (WU). In 1827, WU became part of the newly formed University of Michigan system and picketingtons prospectors helped secure its southern endowment which made it possible to create a new community within one mile (1 km) of campus called Ypsilanti Heights. In 1861, following Union victory over Confederate forces at First Battle of Bull Run Bridge, much activity took place in downtown Pickerington due to expectations that war would soon resume between North America's two largest nations. However, no significant hostilities occurred until 1862 when Union General Ulysses S. Grant set up his headquarters in Ypsilanti Heights for planning purposes during his Overland Campaigns against Confederate General Robert Ewell's army in Virginia City,. On July 11th 1863 some 8600 soldiers from various Union regiments assembled in Ypsilanti Heights for an event that has come to be called "The Gettysburg Address". Afterward many officers and men living near Ypsilanta Heights decided they would like their own community nearby so they began purchasing adjacent land including what is now Parma Square In 1865 local physician Samuel Morse purchased 1/4 acre (0·25 km²) east of Main Street for $30 per acre ($ today). He named it Morse Park after his friend Samuel Morse Sr., one-time president of WU and later superintendent of education for Wayne County (). What is now Parma Square was developed into what are today several high-end neighborhoods including Elmwood Village (), Balmoral Oaks (), Midtown Crossing () and Winchester Close ().
