The first store on Main Street in town opened in 1915 and had a gun room with 20 guns. In 1924, Wm. Haggerty organized the Gunsmiths’ Supply Company which became one of America’s largest firearms dealers carrying over 1,000 guns including pistols, rifles and shotguns. In 1955, when Pickerington became part of Hamilton Township, gun security became an issue as criminals wanted to rob stores without having to worry about being caught with weapons inside. A local man named Don Smith developed a system that disguised gunmen as customers while they were purchasing items from the store floor. This program continued until 1978 when it was discontinued due to budget cuts. Since 1985, picketers have protested outside the County Administration Building against plans for new land used for development south of I-70 between Wade Road and Walnut Street; this property is known as "The Park". On several occasions handguns have been stolen from cars parked there by protesters while drivers were shopping or getting dinner nearby

The area now called Pickerington was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. They naming their town after Pieter Cock (1637-1702), a prominent member of the Dutch East India Company, and Hendrick Hendricksz Viersen (baptized 1590/1 - 1656). In 1797, when Great Britain annexed Upper Canada as part of its expanded empire, Pickerington became part of British Ontario as Welland Township. In 1834, John Cranch purchased land east of present-day downtown from Chief Weahegan and began to build a farmstead that would become known as Cranch's Valley. Two years later he sold his holdings to Edwin Channing for $2,500 cash. Channing used the money to purchase more land and continue developing the valley until it reached its current size. At this point it became known as Dickenson Valley because four men – John Dickinson (1786-1857), Ebenezer Dickenson (1807-1868), Salmon Puckett (1800-1874) and Isaac Norris (1800-1892) – had bought most of what is now Pickerington; only a small piece remained withDickenson's original holdings being left behind near where Dickenson College currently stands today on Euclid Avenue betweenSpringdale Road and South Second Street: these patents remain unbroken down to this day providing an interesting evidence about early development of what is now Pickerton Township

Pickerington, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,792 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stark County. Pickerington was founded in 1814 as a frontier village named after George Pickering, an American Revolutionary War soldier and merchant. The name "Pickerington" originates from the word "picker" meaning "to gather." The first settler in what is now Pickerington was John Watkins who arrived on May 10th, 1814. He had come with his family from Connecticut and preceded by his brother Samuel Watkins had all settled hereabouts before him. In 1817 John Watkins's widow Makeda married James Warther who also came from CT. The first store in town was built by George Barger on the corner of High and Elm Streets in 1819-20 (the building still stands). There were only three stores in town when it platted - one by each side of Main Street - but within a few years there were six or seven convenient places for merchants to open their shops. Pickerington rapidly became known as a center of learning due to its location close to two colleges - Dearborn College (now Michigan State University) and Miami University (now Bowling Green State University). In addition to these two prestigious institutions, Pickerington also boasted several other distinguished schools including: Mercyhurst Academy which opened its doors in 1830; Knox Presbyterian School which opened its doors in 1835; Mount Vernon Female Seminary which opened its doors in 1850; Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church which built its church tower in 1865; Ziegfeld Theatre Company which leased land for use as a theatre between 1902 and 1904; and finally Beechcroft Institute of Technology located on First Avenue North since 1970 where students have engaged mainly in manufacturing research since opening their doors. Today’s vibrant community owes much to the hard work of generations of men and women who have invested their time and energy into making it what it is today – A great place to live, work, play…and raise families!
Pickerington is a city in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 22,816 at the 2010 census, up from 19,735 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland-uyork-Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area. The first recorded settler in Pickerington was Nicholas Pickering in 1796 and it became a town on July 16th, 1821 when it was organized as a village by a group of citizens led by John Rolfe. In 1831, Pickerington had 553 residents and it became an incorporated city on February 14th of that year with James Aiken as its first mayor. On November 3rd, 1931, Pickerington merged with neighboring Defiance to form Defiance-Pickerington which still exists today as an independent city within Cleveland’s boundaries. In 1907, Drury Corp., a manufacturer of medical equipment and supplies founded by John Dickey in nearby Mentor died suddenly and left behind $1 million dollars for community development which would include parks and schools; this would become one ofDefiance's main sources of revenue through taxation until its sale to Mentor Township in 1967. In 1931, local politicians approved plans to build two high school stadiums - one for football (and later baseball) games only and one for both sports combined - which were built instead into what is now FirstEnergy Stadium across from downtown deference . The park complex also includes four tennis courts (two used during Reed Arena events), five basketball hoops (including one derby game), squash court (opened in 2006) as well as wide variety of other recreational activities
