In 1814, Captain James Wilkinson purchased a rifle from Dr. John Denny of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The rifle's stock was made from an oak log that had been split in two by being shot through with a musket ball. It required three men to carry it; one held the stock while the second relieved him, and the third grabbed hold of the barrel before he let go. There were also two outbuildings used by Tilton: One was a barn that served as storage for his horses and cattle; And The other housed hayloft apartments for his slaves who did all their cooking in that building over wintertime because no heat could be generated within the house itself! In 1846, George Stephenson bought “Pickerington Plantation” located north-west of Dayton from Colonel Tilton—the same year that horse-drawn wagons became available in America after being introduced by British forces during Queen Victoria’s War Against Mexico. At this time horse carriages were not practical due to their heavy load capacity so Stephenson converted part of the farm into housing using logs milled down into blocks about eighteen inches thick which formed walls twelve feet high surrounding driveways twenty-four inches wide at each end surrounded by field sod without any fencing between them! By 1860 only 4 homes remained in Village which consisted largely of log structures faced with earth plastered over! Pickerington, Ohio is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,711 at the 2010 census. Pickerington is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Daytona , OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Pickerington was first settled by English colonists in 1771. It became a township in 1827 and then a city in 1902. On July 1, 1907, it merged with the neighboring towns of Middletown and Dayton to form the new metropolitan area of Dayton-Middletown-Daytona . Pickerington's history dates back to 1771 when some English colonists arrived at what are now its corners and started trading with Native Americans. By 1800, settlers had built several stores and churches in what is now Pickerington Township. In 1827, the first municipal meeting was held in what is now downtown Pickerington under the name of "Fultonburgh." One of the items on the agenda was to decide whether or not to incorporate as a city. After much discussion, it was decided that incorporation would be too costly and so instead they voted on making their town an agricultural village known as "Nilesville." There were no schools until after World War II when Bethel Central High School opened nearby; however most residents still attended rural school systems until after that time when transportation became available for all citizens through buses from Dayton across I-75/I-280 into downtown Dayton! In 1902 voters approved an ordinance creating City Hall which served as home for many years before being replaced by present day First Baptist Church building located on Elm Street just east of Main Street (now University Avenue). From 1922 until 1951 there were also two libraries – one open day & one during evening hours only – before both closed due to lack of funding & fire damage respectively! The current library building become operational in 1951 after leaving City Hall! By 1957 there were over 25 businesses operating within Downtown Dayton proper including seven banks while less than 5 miles away lived 400 people!! In 2000 Mayor David Siegel announced plans to demolish portions of buildings between Elm & Main Streets NW (& Chalk Road) leading up to First Baptist Church site due to safety concerns following 9/11 attacks However this plan met resistance from many community members who felt threatened by future developments! The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Pickerington were French colonists who landed on the north side of the Scioto River in 1788 and named it "Bois de la Ville" (Village wood). The first permanent settler in what is now Pickerington was John Pickering, who arrived around 1800. The village had a post office from 1814 to 1837. In 1813, Pickerington became part of the new state of Ohio when it was organized as a result of the Union victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Heights. As part of this process, western Mahoning County was also divided into two parts: one with Pickerington as its capital and the other with Painesville as its second capital. Pickerington experienced rapid growth due to its location within easy reach of both Columbus and Cleveland for business and education opportunities. In 1824, an act was passed by the Ohio General Assembly creating an area west of Cincinnati called “Clinton Township” which would include all present-dayMahoning and Lorain counties; much later these boundaries were changed to form Chardonne Township in 1865 following annexation by neighboring Elkhart County. On December 12, 1830, John Dyer erected a log cabin on land bought from Abram Hinkle near present-day downtown Pickerton after traveling through central Ohio on his Underground Railroad journey from slavery back to freedom. This cabin served as shelter for eight years until it burned down in 1836 while Dyer was away on business. At this time, only men could own property within the town limits; women did not have access to public services or voting rights until after 1840 when they were granted citizenship status under Ohio law (). As settlement increased along river valleys outside of town limits – including areas that are now Perrysburg and Wrightstown – local meetings began discussing ways to improve transportation routes between townspeople and markets located outside their borders; this included forming a road commission which met monthly from 1830 until1841 to recommend improvements such as better roads and bridges across rivers ppuring into townsites; this effort eventually led to establishment of a stagecoach line running between Columbus and Cleveland beginning in 1845! pickerington ohio history
