Pickerington is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,827 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Cuyahoga County and the ninth-largest city in Ohio. Pickerington's central business district is located along I-71 and I-480. The first settlement in what is now Pickerington was made by Captain John Pickering and his family about 1795 on tract 6 of the Northwest Territory west of the Great Miami River. They named their land Pickerington after John Pickering, an Englishman who had been sent to this area as a surveyor for Gen. George Washington's army during the French and Indian War (1763–1768). A post office called Pickerington was established in 1813, and became part of Cleveland. In 1837, picketingtons were taxed on an annual basis for services rendered as soldiers in the anti-slavery movement led by Abolitionist leader Peter Morrill. In 1861, when Cleveland became a state capital, Pickerington voted to become its second city; it lost to Akron City two years later. The log courthouse burned down on July 5th 1865 while being used as the county court house; it replaced with a new building which still stands today (now known as First Presbyterian Church) thanks to private donations from citizens like Ebenezer Scudder and Wm. Brougham Fenton (the founder of Hennepin Bank). After years of decline due to Prohibition (1912–1921), picketingtons reached an all time high during World War II with activities such as manufacturing munitions and providing food for American troops stationed overseas. However, following World War II there began another period of decline that has continued until recent times: crime rates exploded especially after 1990 when Decriminalization efforts ended resulting in increased targeting by gangs looking for easy money throughaunderment operations; however jobs have recently started returning although they are not always secure or well paying
