Pickerington is a town in the southwestern part of Ohio, bordered by Trumbull County to the north and west, Clinton Township to the east, and Bedford Township to the south. The population was 9,418 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Scioto River in central Poland County. The first settlement in Pickerington was called "Emmet" after one of its founders, Emmet O'Neill. In 1811, John Pickering moved his family from Hartford Cliffs, Connecticut to what is now Pickerington after losing his land lottery ticket in Pennsylvania. On July 4th, 1812 he founded Pickerington with four others who had emigrated with him: George White (a resident of Lancaster), Nicholas Davenport (from Danville), Peter Huyckes (of Amherst) and Isaac Brockway (born near Westford). The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Pickeringshaw who fought against British forces during the War of Independence. Pickerington quickly became a leading center for trade and commerce in central Poland County. A number of early businesses included gristmills, sawmills, tanneries and woolen mills; today most remnants are gone but some still stand including the Masonic Lodge #4 which was built c1875 and has been unrestored since then The old schoolhouse which served as both a public school and courthouse until 1954 still stands today as a museum complete with classrooms/labyrinths/ offices dating back to 1792 Notable residents include: Ulysses S. Grant (the General Who Lost Battle Of Gettysburg), Dr Samuel Morse (founder of Western Union Telegraph Company) & Mrs Lucy Stone (the wife of Senator Henry Clay).
