Perrysburg is a town in Harrison County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harrison County and home to the Perrysburg Library and Museum. The history of Perrysburg can be traced back to 1812 when Captain John A. Smith founded the village of Perryburg on the site of present-day Perrysburg Township. He named it for General James H. Perry who had fought in the War of 1812. In 1830, Captain John Gadsden built a cabin near what is now downtown Perrysburg and started trading with Indians and settlers from other parts of Ohio and Kentucky. In 1839, he married Anna Elizabeth Childs, daughter of Caleb Childs (a settler from Kentucky) and Anna Hale (a settler from Pennsylvania). Together they founded what would become one of America's oldest families with roots dating back more than two centuries. In 1848, Cyrus Grimes organized a volunteer militia to help stop a slave rebellion in Virginia that had broken out that year. Afterward, Grimes donated land to form what would become Perrysburg Township; it was first set off into sections in 1850. By 1860, almost three-quarters of all the township's residents were white Anglo-Saxon Protestants while less than one-tenth were African Americans; only 4% were Native Americans or American Indians living within its boundaries at any given time . For most of its history until 1865, when slavery was abolished throughout Ohio through state law rather than by local ordinance or policy – as happened in most UIRS settlements – Perrysburgh functioned as an open black community where slaves worked on farms adjacent to their own homes alongside white farmers raising crops nearby without distinction or suspicion among either group. The town's first post office opened in 1861 ; blacks continued to use it until after Ohio passed its first anti-discrimination law excluding them from public services in 1865 . Negroes did not operate businesses outside their homes but did have some handcrafting capabilities such as pottery making which became well known due to efforts by local resident George Washington Hillman Sr., son of Colonel George Washington Hillman (the owner/director/founderof Cincinnati commercial bank First National Bank) who promoted Negro education during his lifetime as part of his " colored man's Crusade". Downtown businessowners such as Cap'n John Gadsden (1830–1902), Abram Cramer (banking magnate), Israel Putnam (presidential candidate 1912), Fannie Lou Hamer (First Lady OF Tennessee 1917–1921) conducted many important civic functions during this era including meeting house meetings across town informally sanctioned by leaders down at Old Hickory Tavern operated byshopkeeper Jno Pinchback until his death in 1945; Ladies Auxiliary No 1 Post Office Building erected 1922 Also Tower Theatre 1915 This building served until 1951 as store for Eastern Nazarene University student body prior to closure which left downtown vacant for many years Lee Forde Photography studio active 1943–1976

However, through hard work and determination, many citizens managed to survive during this time period. In 1944, after more than 55 years as a community, Old Perrysburgh Cemetery closed its doors for good. Today only a fraction of its original acreage remains intact; however, part of it has been recreated as an interpretive center that offers visitors unique insights into local history. Today’s residents are proud members of their community whose traditions continue strong despite changing times and distance from where they grew up. They continue to celebrate events such as Fourth Of July fireworks displays or May Day parade; these festivities help keep their memories alive long after they leave town.
Perrysburg was founded in 1788 by the Erie Canal company. The town was named after General George Washington, who led the American Revolution. The first store opened in 1803. The population of Perrysburg grew to over 1,000 by 1830. In 1836, the Ohio Statehouse was built in Perrysburg and remains a prominent structure today.
