Perrysburg is a small town in Perry County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,792 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus-Marion-Butler metropolitan area. The village is named for General George Washington and his family who lived there in 1781 during the American Revolution. The general's house still stands in town. The first post office was established in 1801. John Fenton bought land near the present day intersection of High Street and State Route 7 in 1820, and began to build a home that today remains one of the most noticeable landmarks in town. In 1824, he names his home "Fenton Hill". A store opened on this property by John Fenton and others called "The Green Gables" became an important commercial center for the community from its beginnings until about 1870 when it burned down. In 1830 James Lister erected a frame structure on what is now First Avenue which served as Post Office until 1835 when it was moved to Second Avenue which later became Main Street In 1840, Isaac Myers built a gristmill on what is now Fourth Avenue which became an important source of income for many years for the townspeople By 1850, much of what remained rural had been replaced by dense settlements around Town Hall (now located at 241 High Street), although some older buildings still remain including Mrs. Halsey's Store (founded circa 1800) and Mr. Painter's Shop (established 1830). After several years with little progress being made on developing Town Hall Square, Mayor Lewis McGuire persuaded trustees to erect a new building from scratch between High Street and Elmira Road (later renamed Powell Boulevard), west of First Avenue between 1860-1862 . This new building – known as Perrysburg Square – housed courtrooms, municipal offices, public meetings rooms etc., while also serving as gymnasiums for residents; library services were soon added from this square . By 1870 only two houses remained standing within sight of Perrysburg Square: Mrs. Barker’s House east of First Ave., occupied since about 1800 by Widow Anna Barker & her three children; north side across Elmira Rd from square was once occupied by John Barker’s 3 story frame dwelling with basement used as jail cells during time period covered here; south side across Elmira Rd from square was once occupied by Ebenezer Gibbs' 2 story frame dwelling with attached barn/garden north side had been acquired earlier by Jno Wertheim & Geo Pritchard who both died prior to their acquisition date but their names are still pronounced locally - Hancocks & Hawkesworth respectively
