The name of the town is derived from the Perry family of settlers who arrived there in 1814. The original grant to the town was made by Colonel John Beecham of Cincinnati. The first school in Perrysburg was built on a cypress farmstead just east of present-day Market Street in 1821. A frame schoolhouse replaced it in 1828. In 1836, Perrysburg had one school board and five teachers. In 1850, Perrysburg had six stores and 20 residents; by 1860 it had 12 stores and 100 residents. By 1870, the population had increased to 150 with 11 schools and 30 teachers. In 1907, Perrysburg's post office was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer as part of then-President Theodore Roosevelt's centennial celebrations for America's victory over Mexico at Alamo Hill (now Arlington National Cemetery). A new high school building opened in 1966 and remains today as the only high school west of Cleveland that has been continuously used since its creation more than 50 years ago
Perrysburg was founded in 1795 by James Perry. The town grew rapidly and within a few years had a population of over 100 people. In 1814, the community built its first school, which became the nucleus of what is now Perrysburg Community College. The town also developed an important industry, manufacturing ball bearings and other products for the market. In 1865, Perrysburg received its own post office and quickly Expandcd to become one of the largest towns in northern Ohio. By 1879, it had reached its peak as a commercial center with dozens of businesses located on Main Street. However, during the 1880s and 1890s economic decline began to affect Perrysburg, culminating in its incorporation into Cleveland in 1898.
