Perrysburg is a small town in the heart of Ohio, located about 20 miles east of Cleveland. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Perry County and home to The Perrysburg Post Office and Museum. The first settler in what is now Perrysburg was Nicholas Haggerty, who arrived in 1796. He built a log cabin on the present site of the post office. In 1812, John Morse settled here and laid out a town square on which he erected a large stone clock tower. In 1815, James McCullough laid out an even larger square block within the limits of today's post office which became known as McCulloughs Corner. In 1833, General Nathan Bedford Forrest occupied Fort Dearborn (now part of downtown Cleveland) during his military campaign against Native Americans and burned most of it to the ground. As a result, much land around Perrysburg was vacated by settlers for fear that future Indian hostilities would lead to further destruction. Consequently, some people decided to move to Perrysburg instead of moving away fromFort Dearborn altogether. In 1865, Confederate Genlysses Sumpter moved his headquarters from Louisville Kentucky to Cairo Illinois due to political unrest there following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. He called on General Robert Ewell (the man who originally designed Atlanta's Chickamauga Dam) to take control of his army’s stores at Corinth Mississippi and move them into centralOhio so that they could be used as weapons against Union soldiers marching through their area unimpeded. When Ewell failedto carry out this order promptly enough, Confederate LtGen Joseph Hooker ordered all Union forces in north-central Ohio disbanded on September 22nd 1865 under orders from Confederate President Jefferson Davis; these troops were then redeployed south towards Richmond Virginia). The family soon became prominent local citizens and donated land to create a township. The first settler to arrive in what is now Perrysburg was James McGillivray, who arrived on July 5th, 1794. He purchased 640 acres from David Davenport for $200 cash. During the early years of Perrysburgh’s development, its main commercial activity was agriculture. However, as time passed and industry became more popular in the area, many businesses sprang up including a blacksmith shop, cheese factory, grocery store and post office." Some of the most famous residents or entrepreneurs associated with this period include: John Lennon (founder/manager Of Beatles Band), Richie Rich (a millionaire entrepreneur), Willard Scott Card (presidential elector for Ohio) and Myron Eckman (founder/CEO of Eckman Rubber Company). Many important events during this time were also related to commerce such as: America's entry into World War 1; Prohibition; establishment of Franklin County Public Schools; construction of Interstate 74 which links Cleveland with Akron; etc."
Perrysburg was founded in 1795 by John Perry and his family. It became a town in 1812, and it incorporated as a village in 1864. In 1916, the village changed its name to Perrysburg Township. In 1933, the township changed its name to Perrysburg Heights. The township was annexed by the city of Akron in 1974.
