In 1851, Perrysburg was the birthplace of Ohio's first rifle and pistols. The town’s success as a manufacturing center in the early 1800s led to its nickname, “The Arsenal of the West.” Rifle manufacturers from around the country came to Perrysburg to get their hands on the latest firearms technology. In 1925, Perrysburg became home to one of America's first mass-produced handgun companies when Colt Firearms bought out two local gunsmiths. The Perrysburg Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. was formed in 1905 by a group of men who wanted to keep their community safe from gangs and crime. The club had to fight for survival against competition from other rifle and pistol clubs throughout the area. The club became an official member of the National Rifle Association in 1923. In 1938, the NRA donated $1,000 to help start the Perrysburg Rifle and Pistol Club Museum which still operates today.

The town was laid out in 1812 by Colonel John Milton and named for General Anthony Wayne, who had been killed at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Perrysburg was a part of the Northwest Territory until it was admitted to the Union as a state in 1846. The population of Perrysburg reached 914 in 1880, but declined to 711 in 1910. Growth resumed after World War II and peaked at 1,839 persons in 1960. However, decline set in during the 1970s and 1980s as an result of loss of jobs and population growth elsewhere. In 2000, Perrysburg had a population of 653; however, its size has not changed since then and it is considered an small-town culture with many residents working locally rather than outside their community.
Perrysburg was founded by Captain John Perry in 1795. The town was named after him because of the many wild rice fields that lined the banks of the Scioto River. In 1814, Perrysburg became a part of Ohio and it has since grown to become one of the most populous towns in the state. The city is home to many famous landmarks, such as the USS Constitution Museum and Archives, which opened in 1967 and contains artifacts from America's first navy.
