He and his wife Susanna Greenfield were the first white people to live permanently within what would become independent Greene County. They built a log cabin near present day downtown Perrysburg on land they purchased from David Brewer for $1 per acre (0·68 ha). With their help, other early settlers soon began arriving to build homes and start businesses around what is now downtown: John Burt’s blacksmith shop opened for business on December 10, 1800;horizontal mule-drawn wagon trade links farmers with merchants east of Lima via miles of dirt roads; two stores – one owned by Jonathan Dayton and one by Jeremiah White – served as anchors in a growing commercial center that grew rapidly thanks to connections with towns to the south and west via stagecoaches operating between Lima and Cincinnati daily during this time; grist mills produced flour for local markets until railroads arrived to take over production about 1840; churches were erected soon after including First Methodist which built its present sanctuary in 1828 remains among today’s most iconic landmarks within town limits today John Greenfield also played an important role locally as a farmer, entrepreneur & civic leader during this time period serving as mayor of Xenia from 1815-1819 & speaker for both houses of the General Assembly from 1796-1800 & later president pro tempore (9th district) of tha Ohio Senate 1830-1835 In 1825 Pennsylvania Dutchman Jonathan Dayton imported farmsteads into central Ohio through Waterloo Township where he resided while he developed new ideas about how store shelves could be made more efficient using wooden boards instead of nails which led him to found Dayton’s Bookstore - one of earliest bookstores west of Cincinnati Dayton also started construction on what would eventually become downtown Toledo with land he acquired along Third Street between Washington Boulevard and Orange Avenue It wasn't until 1840 when railroad lines reached central Ohio that commerce really took off within town limits thanks to continued growth along Third Street followed by streetcars running parallel route bisecting town Limits back then known as Clinton Road
