Pataskala is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,914 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Pataskala was George Stewart who arrived there in 1825. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Little Miami River. At that time, the area around Pataskala was inhabited by local chief Tecumseh and his people. In 1836, George Stewart's son Andrew purchased 640 acres (2 km2) of land east of present-day Pataskala from John Butler for $600. Andrew developed this land into a post office and store which he named "Pataskala." In 1849, James Kappura moved to Pataskala from Jefferson Township and founded the village of Kawartha Lakes on this same parcel of land which he had bought fromAndrewStewart some years earlier. Kappura renamed it "Pataskala" after his birthplace in Finland where he had been born in 1793. The original store building still stands today as part of the Village Hall complex located at 710 Main Street in downtown Pataskala. In 1870, Jens Olsen started a sawmill at what is now State Route 624 near present-day North High School; it became one of the largest mills active in Stark County during that time period and produced lumber until 1977 when it closed down due to lack of demand. This mill also produced cheese until 1984 when it stopped production because milk prices went up so much that many small farmers could not afford to buy their own milk truck anymore and stopped selling cheese altogether). It was during this time frame that John Fonseca settled down north of town on property he had bought along US Rte 624 just west ofpresent-dayState Route 608 about two miles eastof Grantsboro Cemetery (Fonseca would later name his new community "Grantstown"). Fonseca started farming here about 1880 using an old log farmstead which he built himself using materials brought overland by wagon trainloads from Lancaster County . Pataskala is a city in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mahoning County. The land that now makes up Pataskala was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1811, John Stephenson built a gristmill on the site which became known as Stephenson's Mill after him. In 1813, James Marsh bought Stephenson's Mill and renamed it McLain's Mill. That same year, the town of Pataskala was organized from part of McLain's Mill. In 1827, Alexander Caldwell purchased all of what is now Mahoning County and added it to his own estate for development as an independent township. The town plat for Pataskala was filed in 1830 and named after General David Porterfield who had fought in the Creek War (1812-14). After Porterfield’s death in 1835, his widow donated most of her estate to build a school and church on its original location near present day Arch Street and Washington Avenue. There were only 10 students when classes began on September 2nd, 1830; but within 3 years they had grown to over 100 students with a teacher/warden appointed by Colonel John Ridgely (later 1st Sheriff of Mahoning County). Pataskala was founded in 1834 by Joshua Phelps and John K. Polk. The town of Pataskala was named for Phelps, who had been the first white settler in the area. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Ohio River and its access to trade. In 1838, a post office was established in the town, and by 1840, it had over 100 residents. By 1853, Pataskala had a population of 1,500 people and had several businesses such as a flour mill and a sawmill. In 1865, the railroad arrived in the town and quickly became an important factor in its growth. By 1870, Pataskala had over 2,000 residents and several businesses including a brewery and livery stable. Over time, the townsfolk developed a close embrace of their local community militias which helped protect them from raiders or Confederate forces coming through the area during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1921, Pataskala won its first municipal election ever when incumbent Mayor James A. Bowen became mayor after running unopposed. During his time as mayor, he also initiated many improvements to downtown including new streetscape design In 2003-2004, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans which caused widespread damage throughout Louisiana including much damage to downtown Baton Rouge however no damage occurred within pataskalas boundaries
