Pataskala is a small town in Hancock County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1814 as a double-township named after Pataskala Creek and its mouth on the Triton River. In 1838, it became one of the two townships within the new Warren Township formed from parts of Hardin and Muskingum counties. After the township's creation, much of what is nowpataskala came under its jurisdiction. In 1851, Pataskala became a port town for Trade Islander immigrants who had come to work on an ironclad shipyard located off the coast of Cleveland. The town prospered until labor shortages developed during World War II and production stopped; by then, just a few hundred people lived there. In 1951, pataskala incorporated as a village; it reverted to port status in 1976 when trade dried up again and factories closed down statewide. This resulted in Colt producing over 1 million revolvers between 1857-1900 inclusive

In 1967, local entrepreneur Tom Foulkes revived downtown Pataskala withthoroughly restored buildings and streetscapes; since then it has been one of Cleveland's top tourist attractions.
