Pataskala is an unincorporated community in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 969 at the 2000 census. The site of Pataskala was first surveyed in 1811 by John Stephenson. It was named for General James Pataskala, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and one of the founders of the town of Cleveland. However, no evidence exists to support this claim and it is most likely that the name came from another location in Stark County, such as Patekula or Pattenville. In 1821, George Niles sold land to John Stephenson near present-day Pataskala for $1 per acre. The Stephenson family operated a gristmill hereuntil 1853 when they moved to nearby Copley Township. In 1865, Jno. Stevenson erected a log cabin on what is now Route 604 just east of the present day intersection of State Route 7 and US Route 422 (now Centre Road). The cabin served as a stopping place for travelers en route to Chillicothe or other points west until about 1925 when it burned down and was replaced by a more recent structure. In 1881, Wm Fenton built a large frame house on what is now Center Road/Route 604 for his daughter-in-law Anna Hutton Fenton (1847-1926). Mrs. Fenton established herself as an early local grocer and dry goods merchant before moving her store into her own larger building on Delaware Avenue in 1923 which remains standing today as part of the Village Green Shopping Center complex south of I-70 exit 16A. Pataskala, Ohio is a small town in the unincorporated community of Potterstown, in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Pataskala were Emigrant George and Hannah Englund from Sweden who arrived on July 10, 1814. They built a log cabin on their farmstead which later became known as Englund's Hill. In 1826 Isaac Pohlman moved to the area with his family and Gertrude (Foster) Pohlman from Hinsdale, Illinois purchased land east of present-day Pataskala for $10 dollars per acre (equivalent to ). This section of township was organized as Potterstown Township on November 4, 1827. The first local store was open in 1865 by John Ahey when he bought some supplies from John Sisson at the corner of Main Street and engaged in general merchandizing. The shop operated until 1979 when it closed due to fire damage. In 1916 Wm Jaffray opened a grocery store on High Street which continues to operate today as Jaffray's Pharmacy & Hardware Store. The post office was established at this location on December 6, 1916 by Fenton Moler and continued operations until it closed on October 15th 1978 due to an illness among its employees; however mail continued be delivered through ZIP code 46834 until that time also because there existed a branch office located within walking distance called "Jaffray's Drug Store". At the time of its closure Jaffray's had served 3 million items since its opening date!
