The shop was the first in Parma to sell glass lenses and eyeglasses. Parma, Ohio is a small town in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Beaver Falls, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Parma were British colonists who arrived in 1795 and named it after the city of Palma de Mallorca, Spain where they had been residence for some time before that. In 1802, General George Washington visited Parma while on his campaign against France and was so impressed with its beauty that he ordered General John Forbes to plant an American flag in front of the courthouse as a symbol of American independence. In 1812, when President James K. Polk held his second inauguration here, over one hundred citizens attended from Parma Township and surrounding areas which made up the then-independent village of Kentuckiana (now Beavercreek). The parade began at 4 p.m., moved down Main Street past Government House until it reached Mayor Fenton's house on Park Avenue and then proceeded due south along Park Avenue to City Hall where Polk took possession of his new presidential palace before finally concluding at Parma's Public School ground on Walnut Street near today's main railroad depot (now Northside High School), just south of downtown Parma proper on what is still considered Prospect Hill today (the area now occupied by Pioneer Village shopping center). A number of events during this inaugural period are enshrined in local history including: America's first fire brigade; President Polk giving castration demonstrations to Confederate prisoners; First lady Lucy Anna Roosevelt attending services at Our Lady's Parish; First African American graduate from college--Doris Kearns Goodwin--returning home from college days later than most others; Mrs Roosevelt addressing her fellow women students for "not least among our concerns" about war preparations; president Franklin D. Roosevelt making a speech on energy storage technology here followed by dinner at Masonic Lodge No 2 before traveling north for more important events elsewhere in late summer/early fall 1896...thus beginning America’s great experiment with democracy at home and abroad! On November 5th 1865 Union Genl David Silliman surrendered unconditionally at Fort Donelson Tennessee after two years’ hard fought fighting across three states – all while under siege from Confederate forces encircling him within 25 miles! This significant event ushering in a new era for America resulted not only in huge losses for both sides but also demonstrated how effective Union generals could be when surrounded and outnumbered like they were back then! For many residents who lost loved ones during these times there can never be too much comfort knowing that our ancestors left behind vital memories & artifacts documenting their experiences here - something we take seriously each & every day!
