However, over time attitudes have changed and today Parma enjoys a rich cultural heritage which has led to its nickname "the cultural capital of America." Parma, Ohio is a small town in the Northwest corner of Ohio. The population was 7,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown–Wilmington, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Parma was first settled by the Monongahela tribe in 1795. In 1814, Parma became a village and in 1825 it became a town. The local paper mill closed in 1957 but left behind an extensive collection of historical materials including newspapers, books, photos and documents from that time period. Today much of the library’s holdings are housed within the archives annex which also contains several buildings dating back to 1840 when Parma had its first courthouse. Parma is located on State Route 7 between Middletown and Wilmette. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. According to legend, one night in 1818 when William Lyon Mackenzie took up arms against British forces near what is now Akron (then called Canonsburg), he cut off one side of his head and brought it into Parma so that people could see him as something more than just an Indian chief (the Mackenzies were ardent abolitionists). This story may have started because there is still a large bonfire throughout downtown Parma commemorating this event every year on July 4th - William Lyon Mackenzie Day!
Parma was founded in 1795 by George Rogers Clark. It became a city in 1853 and was the capital of Ohio from 1857 to 1890.
