In 1840, John Davenport founded Davenport & Company which became one of Ohio's largest retailers; Davenport also donated land for what is now University Hill Park near downtown Parma. After becoming interested in agricultural pursuits during his presidency (1849-53) of Presidents' Bank (now part of Fifth Third bank), Carver decided to plant maize crops on some 6 acres he had acquired near his home on Erie Boulevard east of downtown Parma along with other farmers from eastern Ohio who had followed him into agriculture due to high prices for corn stored above ground following years of unprofitably storing corn below ground where it could freeze - rendering it unavailable for export during times of drought or winter freezes noted since before European settlement).
