Parma is named after Parmenio an Italian general who fought against the French during the Seven Years' War. Parmenio's house still stands on Main Street near Today's KFC restaurant. In 1881, John Geddes built a gristmill on the current site of Uniontown Savings and Loan which functioned until 1907 when it caught fire and burned to the ground. In 1894, J.C. Penney opened his store on Third Street which became known as Penney's Department Store and remains one of Parma's most popular tourist attractions today along with its collection of Edwardian Era furniture and other memorabilia from that period.. In 1898, Wm Hickey opened a grocery store on Elmwood Avenue which became known as Hickey’s Grocery Store before being sold to Jens Daubenmire in 1924 and then bought by Rufus Wells in 1951. The post office at 419 Elmwood Ave was established on July 1, 1886 (one week after nearby Worthington). mail service began between Parma and Worthington two days later with corner Postmaster James Fenton serving both towns simultaneously until 1893 when Fenton moved to Dayton to become acting superintendent of education for Greene County only to return to Parma six years later as postmaster effective November 15th 1895 due to resignations of George Dodge (1865-1937) & Augustus Ahern (1868-1942).
