Painesville is a small town in the northwestern part of Ohio, located about 20 miles east of Cleveland and 30 miles west of Cincinnati. It was founded in 1824 and became a county seat in 1827. The population was 54,813 at the 2000 census. Painesville is known for its agricultural production, which includes apples, grapes, corn, soybeans and other crops. The city has a large area dedicated to recreation including an amusement park and two golf courses. In the 1870s painters from Ohio City moved to Painesville to paint the local scenery. Painting by landscape artists such as George Stephenson may have been one reason why painters were drawn to Painesville during this time period. In 1907 painters John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper established their home here before moving on to New York City in 1908. Painter Thomas Hart Benton spent his final years here before dying in 1925. The city's economy changed significantly after World War II when defense industries emerged as major sources of economic growth within the United States following the development of nuclear weapons technology. By 1945Painesville had become an important manufacturing center for post-war America with businesses such as Ford Motor Company, DuPont company and General Electric developing products there such as car parts and aircraft engines. Afterward much of these heavy industry ended but a new software engineering company called Symantec still remains active today in downtown Painesville thanks largely to its location on FirstEnergy Plaza adjacent to Ford's old engine plant buildings Today much of downtown Painesville is composed of business parks adjacent to larger shopping malls while smaller portions remain occupied by factories that have closed or are no longer productive due mainly to automation
