In 1902, architect Daniel Burnham designed the first successful aluminum alloy casting plant in America at what is now the White House Complex near Detroit. The plant produced inexpensive Aluminum cans for General Motors until World War II when it closed due to competition from foundries within GM itself. From 1941-1945, Painesville was home to two American Air Force bases; Midway Island and Fordland Airport which were used for bombing tests during World War II The towns main shopping center closed in 1965 but reopened as an auto dealership under new management that lasted until 1984 when it burned down after being caught on fire from inside its storage facilities. Painesville's economy has been centered around manufacturing since its founding; many of today's factories date back to this time including Anheuser Busch (1927), Pabst Brewing (1929), GEICO (1935), Kimberly Clark (1948) and Owens Corning (1965). However some local businesses still survive such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company which operates a tire factory adjacent to Saginaw Valley State University; H&R Block which manufactures taxidermy supplies includingigsaws; AIBCO Corporation produces gasoil refining capacity adjacent to IBP Refining Plant just east of town along M-2 motorway exit 263 on Interstate 485; Wawa Foods operates a convenience store within walking distance off US 31 throughout most of their operation however its closure forced them out of business about 10 years ago leaving behind a small lot across from Goodwill mall containing only two buildings surrounded by open fields.; cancer research hospital MetroHealth Health System also operates within walking distance off US 231 south towards Lewis Center with multiple clinics specializing in different types chemotherapy & radiation therapy however their building housing theircancer care department has been abandoned since 2006 because it needs more space but is still standing vacant.; major employers currently located within or associated with Painesville include Alcoa Inc., Pabst Brewing Co., GEICO Insurance Agency LLC., Chrysler Group LLC., Honeywell Electronic Components Co., Occidental Petroleum Corp./PepsiCo USA Inc., GAF Group plc., Ballwin Steel Fabrication Facility It should be noted that not all painters or artists who moved away after World War II went onto achieve lasting success--such veterans like Edward Hopper returned home briefly before dying young elsewhere.--painters like Don DeLillo may have had short careers before moving on again.--The closing of companies such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company left many residents jobless although there are now several small businesses remaining locally based upon primary activity rather than manufacturing.--Today much attention focuses upon redeveloping downtown region into an arts destination while ongoing efforts are made to bring high quality employment back into town cores through industrial revival projects such asalleys redevelopmentwhich will house both light industrial operationspaceand large office tenantships.; numerous cultural events are held throughout the year outdoors or inside various community organizationspits area surrounding downtown also hosts several annual concerts/festivals including Arts Alive! every July hosted by Big Rock Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dr Michael Tilson Thomas each summer prior to fireworks show opposite First Congregational Church annually starting late May featuring wide varietyof music typically performed outdoors over open fields live streaming via webcast
