Painesville, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 54,902 at the 2010 census. Painesville is located on the southern edge of what was once an agricultural area called White Township and became part of Cleveland after that city was founded in 1814. The city occupies a triangular area bounded by Sandusky Bay to the north, Lake Erie to the east, and Muskegon Heights to the south-east. It is bordered by Portage Township on its east side, Whitewater Township on its west side, and Berlin Township on its south-west side. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Painesville were traders from Wexford in Ireland who established trading posts there in 1795–96. A small community developed around these trading posts and named it "White Village" because white oak trees were then common in that area. However, early residents did not enjoy high quality water for their purposes so they abandoned White Village and began building new settlements near Muskegon Heights which became known as "Black Town." Black Town grew steadily until 1800 when it lost its main trade route due to construction of a canal connecting Lakes Erie and Huron. In 1814, Cleveland became the first American settlement in what is now Painesville when Captain John Stonington founded his shipyard there after leaving Toronto for America with supplies bound for Mexico City via Canalsand (now part of Michigan). In 1815 townspeople erected a stone courthouse where they met every week to decide local issues including taxation matters. The original brick courthouse has been replaced multiple times but still stands as one of Painesville's most notable landmarks today. Painesville quickly gained prominence as a commercial center due to its excellent location at the mouth of Sandusky Bay which made it easy for shipbuilders to build dockyards and berth their vessels there duringshipbuilding season; this also helped lead to increased shipping traffic through those years which attracted entrepreneurs such as Nicholas Hulbert who built two mills here – Hulbert's Mill No 1 (now part of University Hospitals) and Hulbert's Mill No 2 (now used as offices). By 1830, painters had arrived here from Philadelphia who needed timber for their canvases/paintings while musicians settled down around Lake Erie Performers' Hall which gave rise to nearby Newmarket where music lovers could gather during concerts or plays staged thereabouts or go drinking afterwards with friends or family members back home across town at various taverns like The Crowning Glory or Cook & Crayons before returning home again sometime later that day following an evening performance or ball given by either hall sponsor/owner etc.). Eventually other businesses followed suit such as groceries stores opened up along Sandusky Bay waterfront like General Store & Grains store run by George Pritchard while others started up like Engine House Brewery established by David Evans started brewing beer here beginning with just two barrels per person using empty cans lid stored over night outside until finally becoming one of Cleveland’s leading breweries serving both local residents & visitors alike throughout central Ohio starting with several hundred barrels being sold annually starting about 1850! It wasn't until 1840 when transportation improvements arrived thanks largely to Cassius Clay who funded muchneeded road work within miles radius including making sure wagon roads crossed intersections without obstruction thereby facilitating easier access by goods wagons transporting goods between cities bypassing long stretches Of Indian Territory currently residing inside modern day Cleveland proper - directly opposite present day Painesville! This wouldn't have been possible without having railroads running parallel through our region allowing goods wagons carrying human beings commodities like lumber & flour all along I-71 corridor from Buffaloclear Junction allthe way into downtown Cleveland direct impact uponpresentday Painesville! Today many industries continue operating out OF THIS CITY LIKE WALMART ON CLEVELAND ROAD NEAR THE FOUNDATION OF NEWMARKET TOWN AND THEN RIGHT BELOW THAT ON SANDUSKY BAYWATERFRONT WHERE HEAVY TRANSPORTATION COMPANIES RELATE TO INDUSTRIES FROM CHICAGO DOWN TO WASHINGTON DRIVE SOUTHWEST AT CLIFTON PARK BEFORE RETREATING BACK HOME AGAIN SOMETIME LATER THAT NIGHT!!! However, some businesses have continued to operate in downtown Painville despite their struggles with low sales volume or declining property values because they provide unique services or products that are not found elsewhere within the city limits (e.g., art galleries). Painesville, Ohio was founded on November 3, 1837 by John Griggs. The town was named for Painesville Township in Washington County, Ohio. Painesville's first store opened in 1838. The first post office was established in 1840. In 1847, the grist mill at Painesville became the first practical flour mill in north-central Ohio. By 1860, the population of Painesville had reached 1,000. Painesville grew rapidly during the early 1800s as a result of its location and trade opportunities with other northern settlements such as Akron and Cleveland. In 1836, one of Painesville's founders donated land to build a Methodist church and schoolhouse; construction began that year and it was completed in 1837. The town also gained an early reputation for its fine arts: painters such as David Stone and Moses Woodruff built their homes here while other prominent Central Ohio artists including James McNeill Whistler and Andrew Wyeth visited or resided here intermittently during their careers (e.g., from 1850 to 1860). The town's boom continued into the 1830s through the efforts of its boosters – many of whom were born or spent their formative years here – who pushed for increased trade with surrounding towns and rural areas, improved transportation links via horseback riding routes across Valley Fork River valley Wideman Ferry Bridge (now called US Route 20), development of new industries including brewing beer by local brewery Proctor & Gamble (founded in1857), lumbering operations led by Wm. Muhlenberg & Sons (founded 1863) – all while promoting Potawatomi Indian nameakes like "Pine-Lodge" wine brands which they marketed nationally starting around 1830/31 followed by others like "Mugwort" brandy starting about 1840s It is interesting to note that much later when larger towns were consolidated or chartered within regionally based central business districts (CBDs) large numbers of villages continue to exist even if bound geographically within CBD boundaries - e.g., Avon Lake CDP (#722), Lima Heights CDP (#827), North Olmsted Village CDP (#948), Lancaster Village CDP (#1062) - albeit having lost most if not all economic activity associated therewith
