Painesville is a small town in southeastern Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 7,701 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. Painesville was founded in 1814 by David Humphreys and James Prentice. When Humphreys died in 1821, his two sons took over his business. In 1827, John Wistar began manufacturing optical instruments in Painesville and became one of the largest manufacturers of such products in America. By 1880, Wistar had moved to Cleveland and ceased operations there; however, his products continued to be sold under different names until 1886 when they were renamed Wister Optical Instruments Company. That year also saw the introduction of first modern photographic cameras into America with the release of the Daguerreotype camera by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In 1892–93 Painesville organized its first annual agricultural fair which still takes place today as an event that celebrates American agriculture and industry. The fair has been held every year since then and attracted a million people annually during its peak years from 1976 until 2006 when it was cancelled due to economic recession.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, painesville experienced increased automobile traffic due to its location at the junction of two major roadways. The town also developed an agricultural base which produced hayseed (a type of cereal), cottonseed oil, potatoes, applesauce, onions and other vegetables. In 1907-1908,painesville hosted an annual agricultural fair which attracted attention from around the world. In 1912-13, painesville built a new Masonic temple which remain one of its most popular tourist attractions today. In World War II,Painesville played an important role in supplying food for military camps across America. Many local businesses were closed after production ceased for economic reasons; however some reopened following victory in 1945Benaamie Biltmore Inn & Grill remains open today as one example.
