Painesville is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. Painesville is located in the eastern part of the county and is bordered to the north by Dayton and to the east by Hillsboro. To the south it borders Mentor and Holmes Township. In 1828, residents voted to incorporate as a city under the name "Painesville". The first mayor was John Biddle; he served two terms from 1830 to 1834. The Brown brothers were also instrumental in developing much of downtown Painesville into one large block which still exists today; their grocery store still stands along Third Avenue between Euclid Avenue and Elm Street. In 1861, Mayor Edward Fenton erected an impressive new City Hall annex - completed just before Ohio became a state - that remains standing today as one of downtown's most recognizable landmarks. This period also saw rapid growth in business: by 1870 there were six taverns open in town combined with twenty-six businesses employing over seventy people; by 1880 there were fifteen businesses employing more than one hundred people! Painesville experienced its largest influx of immigrants during World War II when many Polish families came to work at farms or factories near Sandusky while others settled in town after being discharged from military service overseas. Many local residents also volunteered their time working at war plants or other government facilities across Southern Ohioans’ homespun cloth saris – often wearing only ragged clothes – until they received orders to go overseas September 1939 through January 1945 . After returning home following Victory Over Japan Day Parade on December 8th 1945 thousands poured into downtown from all over suburban neighborhoods lining I-675/412 including some that were 1 mile away One can walk around today without encountering another person due to high levels of urban clearance done since then . The village of Painesville was founded about two miles northeast of present-day downtown by Nathan Bedford Forrest during the Civil War; it was burned by Union forces on October 6, 1863 during battle operations around Fort Gratiot just south ofpresent day downtown Painesville while Forrest was fighting north against General Don Carlos Wright's Confederate forces adjacent to present day Woodstock Township

Painesville was home to an important manufacturing center during the 19th century. The town produced cotton fabric, shoes, hats, cigars, and other products. A canal connected Painesville with Cleveland through which goods passed from Pennsylvania to Cleveland. In 1916, Painesville became one of five cities included within the newly created Sandusky County when that county was created from parts of Summit County and Trumbull County. That year also saw the opening of the first commercial airport in Ohio—the now-demolished Wright-Patterson Air Force Base—in nearby Dayton.
