Painesville was founded in 1817 by Nicholas Hasting and others as an agricultural settlement on the Scioto River. The town became a city in 1903, and it has since grown into one of the largest cities in northwestern Ohio. The city was originally named for Nicholas Hasting, who had settled there in 1817 with his family from London. When he arrived, what is now Painesville was part of Ross Township, and its only buildings were a few huts thatched over by Indian hunting parties when European settlers first arrived. In 1818, Hasting married local girl Susannah Sibley and moved to what is now downtown Painesville to start a new life with his new wife and two young children. At this time very little had been done about developing these holdings other than Farming them! As we know today many miles away nothing much has changed but our Ancestors lives have taken many different directions since then... In 1847 Painesville became one of fifteen townships within Mahoning County newly created following the creation of Franklin County on November 8th, 1846 under act entitled An Act To organize certain portions of said county . On February 26th 1850 painesville residents voted 2-1 against incorporation into any future City government due to lack of support from Mayor Ayer/Councilor Porter however this vote did not stop other communities from voting in favor or against incorporation within their own boundaries... In 1865 during Reconstruction efforts began here by President Abraham Lincoln as part of an effort called "Emancipation Proclamation" various African Americans were brought into general society including those living here such as Johnnie Cochran who would later become Congressman from Ohio's 6th congressional district In 1911 local man J C Bickerton developed what would become known as “The Picker Shop” – located at 4241 E Broad Street – becoming one of Painesville’s earliest commercial enterprises For over ninety years this traditional gas station operated providing fuel, cigarettes and candy all while customers could purchase items like ice cream or hot dogs through its small window In 1978 Bickerton sold his business to Gulf Oil Corporation which continued operation until 1984 when it closed its doors permanently after years dealing directly with customers
