Painesville is a town in Jackson County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Painesville is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Painesville was Nicholas Fenton who arrived in 1788 and named it after his friend and fellow Englishman, John Fenton. The first post office in Painesville was founded in 1812 and was called "Fentonville". When the township was organized in 1824, it included all of what is now Jackson County except for parts of southern Summit Township. The name "Painesville" originated from a French term meaning to give water to cattle or pigs. The Erie Canal passed through Painesville on its way from Cleveland to Buffalo, New York; so much did this settlement become known as the Canal City that the original title of the town became obsolete when sovereignty over that part of Ohio passed from England to America. In 1827, following annexation by Akron, Painesville became an important transportation center with three railroad stations: one on each side of the canal route between Cleveland and Buffalo; also located there were two stores and two hotels catering to travelers en route eastward or westward along the canal route. By 1830, however, locomotive traffic had diminished sufficiently that Amtrak began running passenger trains through Painesville only sporadically; today Amtrak serves both Akron (via Canton) and Cleveland (via Toledo). In 1892 painters Jno.[? Wessels] Sayers and Sons established their business here as Sayers & Sons Painting Company which still operates under its original name out of four buildings on Main Street today! Painter-in-chief during this time for Sayers & Sons Painting Company was Wm.? Haddon. Prior to coming to Painesville he had been associated with several other companies including Moore Bros., Haddon & Clark Fine Art Merchants Co., Wm.? Shively Fine Arts Gallery Incorporated (now Middletown Museum), Donelson Gallery Corp., Purdy Fine Arts CO., etc.; but it’s Painter-in-Chief who truly defines “the old school” painting techniques here at Sayers & Sons! This period marked a turning point forPainters throughout Northeast Ohio as they were able finally start feeling secure about having an actual storefront gallery where their paintings could be seen by people outside their home towns! Many painters during this time started opening up shop commercially across state lines just like [John] Lennon did when he opened his very ownGallery back in Liverpool!!
