Painesville's first settlers were farmers who arrived in 1815 from Connecticut. They built log homes with large square feet of living space and raised chickens and pigs for their own use. In 1840, Drury became one of the first physicians practicing medicine within 150 miles (240 kilometers) of Toledo when he opened his practice at what is now called Fridley Park Hospital on High Street in downtown Painesville. With its growing industry came an increased demand for labor which led to widespread misery among workers during the late 19th century; due to low wages and unsafe working conditions many workers were forced into poverty or into migrated out-of-state for better job opportunities. However, through clever marketing efforts by merchants and politicians alike, Painesville slowly began to recover from its economic slump during the 1920s until it reached its current level of prosperity by 1990.
