The original name of the village site was "Peshtigo," which means "hollow" or "cave." In 1835, the General Assembly changed the spelling to Painesville to avoid confusion with nearby towns that had similar names such as Portsmouth and Lima. Painesville's history can be traced back to when John Husted settled here in 1814 from Dover Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania; he and his wife Anna Maria were the first white settlers in this area of what is now northwestern Ohio. They came overland from Philadelphia along the Great Lakes watershed route then known as the Erie Canal Company's Stage Road Alternate route to purchase 1/2 mile (3 km) of land at what is now Main Street and North Avenue in present-day Painesville limits after being rejected by local pioneer Christopher Canfield for having no goods with them other than salt pork aboard their wagon train journeying through western Pennsylvania during wintertime! On October 17, 1814 – three days after Columbus reached America's new continent – Husted founded Painesville with seven others nearpresent day Akron on Lake Erie’s north shore just south of today’s Wellsburg neighborhood within present day Mentor borders northeastward from where he had landed!!! That same year President James Krieger signed an act creating township of Painesville out of parts ot Powell Township northwestward lying eastward watered by Monongahela River including all those lands lying west side onlyedgeofMonongahela RiveronMonongahelaheathandlyingnorthwestwesterlytowardsLake Erie!!! This act also provided for township seat at Temperanceville thenceforward called “Peshtigo” meaning “hollow” or “cave” until finally adopting its current name…..painesville on October 17th1814!!!!! So back then we pretty much knew our place!!!!!! 🙂 From there things started getting interesting………..In 1836 our very own Mayor Payne appointed JnoDraper deedseeker & surveyor surveyor & laid out streets laidout lots laidouts schools built churches etc….the list goes on & on some would say it feels like painevers founding story might have been written specifically for us!!!!!
