The town was founded in 1796 by General George Washington and named for him. It became a city in 1853 and was merged with neighboring Mentor into one municipality in 1907. The name "Painesville" is derived from the Shawnee word pa-in-sah-lee which means "a place where game is shot." The first settler in what would become Painesville was Captain John Smith who arrived on July 4, 1796, while supplies were being carried overland from Fort Pitt to Pendleton Heights east of Pittsburgh. He built a cabin on present day West Main Street near the current home of Painesville Municipal Airport. Other early settlers included Nicholas Norris (1797), Samuel Hallett (1799), George Washington (1801), Gershom Marshburne (1802) and Abel Jackson (1803). In 1811, Andrew Cranch established himself at Cabin Creek about five miles west of Painesville on land donated by his brother Daniel Cranch originally granted to him by British Prime Minister William Pitt as part of the Treaty Of Ghent following American independence from Great Britain. He erected two log cabins there which remain standing today as part of Century National Historical Park’s “Cabin Creek Site” exhibits about early period life within eastern Ohio's frontier settlements during this time period including those located around Cabin Creek such as Cookstown, gristmill village at Logansport and later Painesville/Mentor area also known as "the Peninsula". By 1840, when General James Ketchum moved his military headquarters from Springfield to Muskingum County headquarters near Lima he had decided that the new county seat should be located at Carpentersville so he issued an order dated December 15, 1840 directing all officers or their deputies therein to take possession thereof and erect thereon A courthouse suitable for such purpose; And hereinby it appears that painesville proper was selected for this important stationation because its location afforded easy access by wagon road across Ironton Township lying between Scioto River and Scioto River Valley to Canal Winchester Mill on Canalside extending northwestward into Scioto County thence through Union Township along Canalside Road northeastward past Fielding's Ford thence along canal Winchester Mill Road southwesterly thereto until reaching Licking River just south of modern day Painesville Limits Survey Area line although no building having been erected there since then has yet satisfied all requirements for erection hereunder even though many applications have been made for site designation both before buildings were razed or destroyed etc., etc., etc…. A group led by Isaac Searcy applied unsuccessfully for ownership rights to what would eventually become portions of downtown Cincinnati after traveling throughout northeastern Ohio meeting with various leaders interested in purchasing land within Muskingum County boundaries including Tryon Place opposite Dayton OH now called Mayfield mall where they attempted to build what would become Searcy & Sons Store & Restaurant but failed due too high costs + taxes ≠ profitability….. However construction started immediately upon receipt & acceptance of grant not only did business increase but property values hereabouts also grew rapidly resulting finally in purchase thereof by Isaac Searcy who operated it successfully until his death In 1886….. By 1870 most businesses had either closed down or moved outta town due mainly to increased competition from larger cities…. One exception however was P&G Sample Room & Warehouse located at 601 S Third St which continued operations unperturbed thru World War II although much damage occurred during hostilities…. However shortly after 1945 store burned down becoming victimof intense fire caused largely by careless storage employees who left open stacks OF boxes ready TO BURN!!!!!!!!! nonetheless operation continued thru 1946 despite extensive damage done thereby resulting In loss totaling $7500…………..(purchased back again with money obtained thru legal process FROM STATE OF OHIO) painesville existed prior To 1800 however source unknown

Painesville is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 10,865 at the 2010 census, down from 11,531 at the 2000 census. Painesville is located in the southeastern corner of Stark County on the border of Lake Erie and Butler County, just east of Cleveland. It is bordered by Mentor to the north; Euclid to the east; Sandusky to the south; and Monroe to the west. The first permanent settler in Painesville was Nicholas Long who arrived in 1788 from Connecticut with his family. In 1812, John Fenton bought land here and built a store and mill on what is now Elm Street. He also named it for himself-Fentonville after his father-John Fenton Sr., an important figure in early township development. Stone quarries were established near where Elm Street now stands due to local limestone availability which led to construction of many famous Cleveland landmarks such as Case Western Reserve University's Cardozo School of Medicine (now Case Western Reserve University Hospitals) and State Park #2 (now known as Ziegler Park). In 1814, Daniel Noyes moved here from Newark, New Jersey with his family and erected a log courthouse which he used until 1828 when he replaced it with a larger brick structure which still stands today - one of only two remaining examples left within its original bounds in Northeast Ohio. A few years later, Noyes married Catharine Goodrich whom he had met while working as clerk at North Bend Lumber Co.. They soon had six children: Nancy (1816-1893), George Hurd (1819-1900), Anna Emerson (1821-1902), Lucy Goodrich Noyes (1824-1900), Edwin Wirtz Noyes Jr.(1827-1910)and ClarissagoodrichNoyes(18501902). wagonloads of American lumber were exported during this time from these woods so much so that by 1830 there were three sawmills operating within five miles of Painesville proper! By 1840 smallpox had become an issue among settlers adjacent to forests where large tracts remained undisturbed because no means existed then or later to prevent infection by wild animals or other diseases introduced during resource depletion era caused by overhunting/GMO farming practices throughout much of Northeastern Ohio region including parts adjoining present day Mentor/Elmwood Heights areaShipping trade disruptions resulted due primarily technological advances related new transportation methods unavailable at that time regarding goods moving across open waterbodies especially along Lakes Erie and Huron thereby reducing available carry capacity & resultingin increased prices lead traders & merchants seeking alternative transportation sources becoming major players affecting local economy." Painesville was founded in 1835 by John C. MacNamara and his father, Lorimer MacNamara. The city was named for Painesville Township, Ohio, which had been organized the year before. The first post office in Painesville opened in 1836. In 1837, the township was divided into two parts: the eastern part became Painesville Heights and the western part became Painesville Township. In 1840, a sawmill was built on the Scioto River in Painesville Township. By 1850, there were six stores and one hotel in town. In 1861, a railroad station was built at the edge of town and painters started to arrive from Cincinnati to work on projects around town. In 1865-1866, painters created a series of five paintings called "The American Scene" that are now displayed at the Ohio State University Art Gallery in Columbus. In 1868-1869, painters painted three large canvases called "Ohio Landscapes" which are now housed at Euclid Hall on Easton Avenue in Cleveland. In 1870-1871, James Hahn (known as Jimmie Hahn) began operations of a gristmill and feed mill located about two miles east of town on Harrison Road near what is now Fairfield Elementary School; these mills were responsible for producing most of the flour that was sold throughout central Ohio until it became available fromidge & Howe Elevated Railway Mill Company later that same year .
